Volleyball Improves Win Streak to Five, Tops KWC in Four Sets

OWENSBORO, Ky. -- The Ohio Dominican volleyball team continued its unbeaten start to the 2021 winter season with a 3-1 victory at Kentucky Wesleyan Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers defeated KWC 26-24, 23-25, 25-15, and 25-13.  

RECORDS 

  • Ohio Dominican matches its longest unbeaten streak to start a season in its Division II era. The Panthers are now 5-0 overall and in Great Midwest play. ODU's set record this season is now 15-2. 

  • KWC falls to 1-3 on the campaign. The Purple Panthers' three losses have come to opponents that are now a combined 14-1 this season.  

INDIVIDUAL NUMBERS 

  • A balanced defensive effort saw four Panther players finish with 10 or more digs. Freshman Kelsey Shoup (Dalton, Ohio) led the way with 16. Newcomers Audrey Jenkins (Canal Winchester, Ohio) and Alexis Keipert (Burlington, Ky.) each added 10 digs, while sophomore Kamryn Maxwell (Norwalk, Ohio) pitched in 12 digs with six kills and three aces. 

  • Junior Amanda Remmetter (Springfield, Ohio) led ODU with 14 kills. Remmetter posted four kills in the final three sets Tuesday, hitting .297 with four blocks defensively.  

  • Setting a new career high with nine blocks was junior Abbi Gillson (Canton, Ohio)Gillson added seven kills to finish with 11.5 total points.  

  • Sophomore Carleigh Deitsch (St. Henry, Ohio) paced the Panthers with 18 assists. Junior Zoe Carmichael (Wooster, Ohio) added 10 helpers and was one of five players with four-plus blocks. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • ODU jumped out to early leads in the first two sets, but both came down to the wire. The Panthers rallied from a one-point deficit late in the first game, scoring the final three points. One of two aces from sophomore Emilee Fecht (Hilliard, Ohio) gave ODU a 26-24 first-set win. 

  • The Panthers did not allow KWC to hit above .100 the entire match, but ODU was outhit in the second set due to eight attacking errors. Despite the miscues, ODU led the second set 7-0. KWC rallied and kept the set close throughout and eventually rallied to win 25-23. 

  • After seeing its 13-set win streak snapped, Ohio Dominican responded with double-digit victories in Games 3 and 4. ODU held KWC to a negative hitting percentage in both frames, which experiencing their most efficient offensive efforts of the match.  

  • ODU enjoyed a 3-1 edge in blocks in the third set and a 7-0 advantage in fourth-set rejections.  

  • An ace from sophomore Madison Smith (Elyria, Ohio) concluded the match in the fourth set. 

GAME NOTES 

  • Ohio Dominican entered Tuesday's match as one of just 20 unbeaten teams nationally across Division II.  

  • The Panthers registered a 15-4 advantage in total blocks against KWC. ODU's block total Tuesday is tied for the third most in the program's Division II era. 

  • ODU tied a season high with nine service aces as well.  

UP NEXT 

  • The Panthers will stay on the road but will travel north of Columbus to face Walsh at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 12.
