COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican volleyball team won the opening set against Shorter Saturday afternoon but fell in four sets in the finale of the Southern Indiana Invitational.

The Panthers took the opening set 25-13. ODU got off to a fast start, tallying a point on seven of the first nine rallies. The lead was extended to double digits, 16-4, thanks to two service aces by freshman Kamryn Maxwell (Norwalk, Ohio). The Black & Gold hit .435 in the set, while holding Shorter to a negative-.138 mark.

Despite the strong showing offensively in the first set, the Panthers cooled off and were defended at the net by the Hawks (5-5) over the final three frames. Shorter posted early five-point rallies in each set to take control and ultimately earn set scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-13, respectively.

ODU did finish with an 11-5 edge in total blocks, giving the team a new season-high mark and at least five rejections in each of the last five appearances. Sophomore Riley Kizer (Mason, Ohio) and freshman Emilee Fecht (Hilliard, Ohio) recorded seven assisted blocks each to lead the way. Kizer added nine digs defensively, while Fecht pitched in eight kill.

Sophomore Abbi Gillson (Canton, Ohio) led the team with nine kills, while also tallying four assisted blocks. Maxwell and sophomore Amanda Remmetter (Springfield, Ohio) combined for eight kills and five service aces. Senior Allie Rutter (Fostoria, Ohio) led the team with 15 digs, while freshman Carliegh Deitsch (St. Henry, Ohio) paced the Panthers with 25 assists.

After traveling over 300 miles to compete in each of the first three weeks of the season, ODU will return home to welcome Mt. Vernon Nazarene for its home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 24. The Panthers and Cougars are set for a 7 p.m. first serve inside Alumni Hall.
