GRANVILLE, Ohio – Alyssa Newsom (Granville, Ohio) of the Ohio Dominican women's golf team earned first place in the Columbus District Golf Association Women's Amateur Championship, played July 13-16, at Denison Golf Club.
Newsom, qualified for the eight-person, match play bracket with an 81 on Tuesday, July 13, earning the No. 4 seed. The incoming junior for ODU then won 2&1 in her quarterfinal and semifinal matches, before claiming the trophy with a 3&2 victory in the tournament finals on Friday, July 16.
Despite the close matches in the first two rounds, Newsom never trailed in the quarterfinal and semifinal matches. Through her qualifying and first two rounds of match play, 52 total holes, Newsom tallied 29 pars and four birdies.
En route to her championship match, Newsom defeated two collegiate golfers, both of whom with NCAA Division I experience. The Panther topped No. 5 seeded Taby Robinson, who was a junior on the 2020-21 Division II Rollins College (Fla.) team and a transfer from Michigan State University. In the semifinal round, Newsom defeated Ohio University's Ashley Flynn, who was the CDGA Women's Amateur No. 1 seed.
In the championship match, Newsom competed against the No. 3 seed, Natalie Pardi. Newsom was two-down early, but returned the finals to all square at the halfway mark. Newsom built on that momentum to win the 10th hole to go one-up. She never trailed on the inward nine, as a birdie on hole 13 and a par on the 15th improved Newsom's advantage to as many as three-up in the match.
Newsom appeared in all eight tournaments for ODU during the 2020-21 season. She ranked second on the team in scoring average, 83.4. Newsom had three top 20 finishes as a sophomore, including the Great Midwest Athletic Conference championships, as well as a season-best third place finish at the Mount Vernon Nazarene Fall Invitational.
