COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican women's basketball team picked up its third consecutive victory in the month of January by earning a 59-52 victory over conference foe Hillsdale College. The victory improves the Panthers record to 8-9 (3-4 G-MAC) and the loss drops the Chargers to 5-11 (2-5 G-MAC).
The Panthers began the game strong, scoring six of the first eight points in the contest. Senior forward Brittleigh Macaulay (Big Prairie, Ohio) and sophomore guard Alli Kern (Waterford, Ohio) helped lift the Black & Gold to a fast start.
Kern also contributed on the glass collecting a game-high 14 rebounds (one shy of her season best) which contributed to the Panthers 22 second chance points.
Hillsdale countered by going 6-14 from the field and shooting 57-percent from behind the arc in the first quarter. The Chargers defense allowed ODU to shoot just 27-percent from the floor during the period. Guard Grace Touchette went three-of-four from the field and was perfect from beyond the arc to collect eight of her game-high 18 points on the evening. Her effort gave Hillsdale a 16-13 advantage heading into the second quarter.
ODU stormed back with an 8-2 run to close out the second half. Junior Angela Troyer (Sugarcreek, Ohio) and senior Alexa Fisher (Powell, Ohio) played every minute of the second quarter and combined for 10 points. Forward Brittleigh Macaulay grabbed two rebounds and scored four points improve her stats. She finished the first half with 10 points and five rebounds.
Fueled by an eight point scoring run the Chargers outscored the Panthers 19-13 in the third quarter. Touchette along with guard Lauren Daffenberg accounted for 68-percent of the Chargers scoring output. The run pushed Hillsdale to a one point advantage heading into the final period.
The Chargers would see their lead expand to just 48-46 before ODU would storm back. Panthers guard Angela Troyer scored six points within a three minute span and added a steal as she led her team to a 52-48 lead with five minutes remaining in the contest. Alli Kern collected rebounds to limit the Chargers scoring opportunities and close out the game, lifting the Panthers to a 59-52 victory.
The Panthers have won three of their last four contests in the month of January. ODU returns to action Thursday January 16 at Lake Erie. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 inside of the Jerome T. Osborne Family Athletic and Wellness Center.
