Botello Sets New School Record As Track and Field Impresses At Jessica Starks Open

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio Dominican track and field competed in its first and only event in Central Ohio, traveling to Capital University in Bexley, Ohio to participate in the 2020 Jessica Starks Open. Numerous Panthers enjoyed a successful afternoon with many earning a top five finish or better. 

Women 

Freshman Celeste Pierce started the day on a high note for the Panthers, earning a second place finish in the 60-meter dash finishing with a time of 8.13 seconds. 

Shaunqueza Stevens (Dublin, Ohio) continued her terrific form on Saturday afternoon, collecting two top-five finishes. Stevens has collected a top-five finish all three events ODU has appeared in this season. She earned a third place finish in the 200 meters, finishing with a time of 27.95 seconds. The senior added a fifth place finish in the 400 meters to round out a busy afternoon. 

Emma Lutz (Celina, Ohio) earned her first top-three finishes of collegiate career. Lutz earned a second place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 2:34.20, and third place in the mile with a mark of 5:48.82. Both are career bests and beat times established at the Tiffin Dragon Open last weekend. 

Just behind Lutz in the mile was teammate Ashley Wihl (Williamsport, Ohio). She earned her best finish of the spring in the mile, finishing in fifth place with a time of 6:03.83. 

The Panthers enjoyed success in the field events as Emma Barth (Dayton, Ohio) finished in fourth place in the weight throw with a mark of 13.99 meters. 

In 18 events scored, Ohio Dominican finished in fifth place with 52 points. The hosts Capital collected 95 points to finish at the top of the standings in the Women's competition.

Men

As was the case for the women, the Panther men enjoyed success during Saturday's event. Junior Omar Jalloh (Pataskala, Ohio) finished in fourth place in the 200 meters, completing the event with a time of 23.79 seconds. Jalloh also finished strong in 400 meters with a time of 52.44 seconds.

He completed the event just behind teammate Marcus Steele who finished in second place with a time of 51.21 seconds. 

Sophomore Adam Kamel (Brook Park, Ohio) finished in third place in the 800 meters with a time of 2:06.03. That beats his previous mark of 2:13.03 set at last week's Tiffin Dragon Open. 

Draven Bass (Circleville, Ohio) continued his successful spring campaign. The senior earned a second place finish in the 1000 meters, with a time of 2:39.78. He also finished in second place in the 4x400 meter relay as he teamed with Omar Jalloh, Cam Brandon (Cleveland, Ohio), and Marcus Steele. The quartet finished with a time of 3:33.73, just behind the winning team that posted a time of 3:33.69. 

Caleb Belmont (Carroll, Ohio) picked up a win in the mile, finishing with a time of 4:30.69. He also added a fourth place finish in the 1000 meters. 

It was a record setting day for ODU as senior Alex Botello (Hilliard, Ohio) finished in second place in the pole vault with a mark of 4.30 meters. That eclipses the previous school record of 4.27 meters held by Logan Terrell. 

Junior Ben Cook (Mount Vernon, Ohio) finished the day earning third place in the shot put with a distance of 13.69 meters. 

ODU is back in action next weekend as they travel to Northeast Ohio to participate in the Youngstown State University National Mid-Major Invitational.
