COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican softball concluded the final day of the 2021 regular season on Sunday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader series with Hillsdale College. The Black and Gold fell by the score of 7-1 in the first game, before rebounding to capture a 3-1 victory in the second game.
The Chargers opened up the scoring in the top of the fourth inning, driving in four unanswered runs. The visitors added one more run in the next inning to jump out to a commanding 5-0 advantage.
Freshman shortstop Alexis Stevens (Marion, Ohio) broke up the shutout in the bottom of the sixth inning when her RBI double to left-center field drove in Braxton Downs (Prospect, Kentucky) to cut the lead to 5-1.
Hillsdale responded by scoring two runs in the top of the seventh inning to lift them to a 7-1 victory in game one.
ODU rebounded nicely in game two behind a strong pitching performance from sophomore Olivia Rettke (Reynoldsburg, Ohio). The second-year pitcher allowed just one run in six innings of work.
Downs was once again involved in the Black and Gold scoring, stealing second base in the first inning but a throwing error on the play allowed senior Carson Hackerd (Frankfort, Indiana) to score. The second-year infielder also hit her 11th home run of the season to give ODU a 3-0 lead over the Chargers.
Hilldale attempted to answer with a solo bomb in the top of the fourth, but that was the only offense they could muster as Addison Smodilla (Terre Haute, Indiana) closed the door to earn the second save of the season.
That's all for the regular season as the Panther finish the 2021 spring with a record of 24-16 overall and 13-9 in conference play. ODU has clinched a spot in the 2021 Great Midwest Softball Tournament that will be played at Marathon Fields in Findlay, Ohio.
Information regarding the tournament will be released in the coming days.
