OWENSBORO, Kentucky – The Ohio Dominican softball team began its final road trip of the season in tremendous fashion Sunday afternoon, earning a doubleheader sweep against Kentucky Wesleyan.

ODU claimed game one, securing a 13-0 victory in five innings. The Black and Gold followed up their game one performance by capturing game two, winning by the score of 4-2.

The visiting Panthers opened up the scoring when freshman shortstop Alexis Stevens (Marion, Ohio) singled up the middle to drive in Braxton Downs (Prospect, Kentucky) to give ODU a 1-0 advantage. The scoring continued in the second inning as Downs secured an RBI single, driving in two runs, the lead swelled to 5-0 as freshman Baylee Adams (Cardington, Ohio) reached on an error that allowed Alli Madden (Cincinnati, Ohio) to score from third base.

ODU added three more runs in the third inning to extend the lead to 8-0. The Black and Gold added four more runs in the top of the fourth before Stevens collected a sacrifice fly to swell the lead to 13-0. The advantage proved too much for the Purple Panthers and allowed the Black and Gold to claim victory in game one.

It was the 11th complete game for junior Sydney Long (Ashland, Ohio) who also captured her 11th victory of the season. The third-year Panther pitched five scoreless innings and allowed just one hit in her outing.

ODU returned to action in game two and struck first in the top of the fourth inning. Stevens doubled to left field to drive in two runs to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage. Senior Kristen Bales (Pickerington, Ohio) extended her conference lead in triples, with a three-bagger to right-center field to drive in a run. Madden would drive in Madison Shemwell (Owensboro, Kentucky) with a ground out to third base in the top of the fifth inning to extend the lead to 4-0.

Kentucky Wesleyan answered with a two-run bomb in the bottom of the inning as pitcher Evyn Hendrickson helped her own cause to close the gap to 4-2. That would be all from the hosts as Olivia Rettke (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) would shut the door to earn her second save of the season.

ODU returns to action on Monday afternoon, traveling to the Music City to battle Trevecca Nazarene. First pitch is scheduled for 12 PM EST.
