COLUMBUS, Ohio – Following a brief road trip to Ashland, Ohio, the Ohio Dominican softball team returns home for two doubleheaders, battling Northwood University on Friday evening and Grand Valley State on Saturday afternoon. The Black and Gold return home winners of their last eight contests and have swept their last three series.
ODU returns to action following a mid-week sweep of Ashland University on Wednesday afternoon. The Black and Gold received production from sophomores Madison Shemwell (Owensboro, Kentucky) and Braxton Downs (Prospect, Kentucky) along with freshman Alexis Stevens (Marion, Ohio).
The trio helped spark several scoring runs and even allowed the Black and Gold to hang seven runs on the Eagles during the second game. Pitchers Syndey Long (Ashland, Ohio) and Olivia Rettke (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) combined to strike out 13 batters.
The Timberwolves return to Columbus, Ohio, for their first visit since April 2018. NU comes into Friday's doubleheader with a record of 7-2 and winners of their last six contests. Northwood has been impressive offensively, scoring 64 runs over the course of nine games, and are hitting for a team average of .282 for this season.
Senior Grace Dutoi leads the Timberwolves offensively, hitting .423 this campaign. She also leads the team in extra-base hits this season with five.
Shayna Frank has shouldered much of the workload in the circle for the Timberwolves this season. The senior leads the team with over 40 innings pitched and a 1.38 ERA.
SCOUTING GRAND VALLEY
As is the case with their GLIAC colleagues, Grand Valley is off to a strong start in 2021. The Lakers are 6-2 on the season and come off a 7-0 win against Lake Erie College. GVSU is ranked No.19 according to the latest poll by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
Freshman Hannah Hollister has emerged as a leader for the Lakers, she leads the team in hitting with a .444 batting average in seven games. Teammate Lydia Goble leads the team in extra-base hits, collecting three doubles and two home runs this season.
Sophomore Hannah Beatus leads the team in pitching, tossing 19.2 innings with 17 strikeouts.
The first pitch against Northwood University is scheduled for Friday, March 19 at 3 PM and first pitch against Grand Valley State is scheduled for Saturday, March 20 at 1 PM.
