COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican softball team returned to Panther Field on Saturday afternoon to complete its weekend series against Saginaw Valley State University and West Liberty University. The Black and Gold split its results falling to the Cardinals 6-3 and picking up a 4-3 victory against the Hilltoppers.

Saginaw Valley State claimed an early lead in the first game when a fielder's choice drove in the Cardinals first run of the contest. ODU orchestrated an answer as Allison Madden (Cincinnati, Ohio) stole third base and came home after an error by the SVSU catcher that allowed the Panther outfielder to cross home plate.

ODU captured the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as Madden found base once again as her plate discipline earned her another walk. Sophomore Madison Shemwell (Owensboro, Kentucky) tripled to the outfield and pushed Madden across home plate all-the-way from first base. A single from Alexis Stevens (Marion, Ohio) drove in Shemwell to give the Black and Gold a 5-3 advantage.

The Cardinals orchestrated a five-run seventh inning and spoiled the first game for the Panthers, winning 6-3.

The Black and Gold struck early in game two as Raemon Meents (Downers Grove, Illinois) earned an early walk in the second inning. She moved up a base as Addison Smodilla (Terre Haute, Indiana) singled through the infield. Madden drew another walk, which led to an opportunity for senior Carson Hackerd (Frankfort, Indiana). The senior uncorked a bases-clearing double that drove in her Panther teammates to give the Black and Gold an early 3-0 advantage.

Smodilla helped her own cause as the pitcher, forcing an error from the opposition that allowed Stevens to cross home plate in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Hilltoppers scored three runs in the sixth inning but a strong relief appearance from Olivia Rettke (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) slammed the door on WLU and lifted the Panthers to their second victory of the weekend.
