HARROGATE, Tenn – The Ohio Dominican softball team dropped both of its contests on Saturday at Lincoln Memorial University, falling 2-1 in eight innings against Davenport University during game one and 7-0 versus host Lincoln Memorial in game two.
In game one, the Black and Gold were held to just three hits as Braxton Downs (Prospect, Kentucky), Baylee Adams (Cardington, Ohio), and Alexis Stevens (Marion, Ohio) found the scoresheet in that statistical category.
It was a pitcher's duel until the bottom of the fifth inning when Davenport struck. DU infielder Gabby Palazzolo singled up the middle, driving in Emma Miller to gain an early advantage.
The Panthers answered during the next half inning as Downs singled out to left field to begin the Black and Gold scoring run. ODU loaded the bases as Keirah Smetzer (Ashland, Ohio) came to bat. The junior forced a walk that allowed Downs to score and tie the game at one-a-piece.
The game would head to extra innings as the tight defensive contest continued. DU earned a sac-fly to drive home a run a secure the game.
In game two, Lincoln Memorial scored early and held the Panthers in check, limiting the Black and Gold to three hits. Junior Sydney Long (Ashland, Ohio) pitched five innings and secured five strikeouts in her season debut.
ODU returns to action Sunday facing off against both teams once again. The Black and Gold faceoff against Davenport at 10:00 a.m. and finish the weekend with a rematch against the Railsplitters at 2:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
