Softball Storms Back In Wins Over Lake Erie

PAINESVILLE, Ohio — Ohio Dominican's softball team rallied late in wins over Lake Erie by final scores of 4-3 and 10-9 on Sunday.

ODU (20-18, 7-5 GLIAC) trailed by one run heading into the seventh innings of both contests but scored two runs in the final frame of both games to earn the victories.

The Panthers trailed 3-2 in game one before scoring two runs in the top of the seventh to key a 4-3 win, and in game two, freshman Landry Slider (Stow, Ohio) delivered a two RBI single in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to score sophomore Kelly Mix (Baltimore, Ohio) and senior Casey Murdoch (Morrow, Ohio) in a walk-off, 10-9 win.

The Panthers rallied to defeat Lake Erie by a final score of 4-3 in game one of the doubleheader. ODU trailed 3-1 in the top of the sixth with two outs, but an RBI single through the right side by Slider scored Mix to cut ODU's deficit to 3-2.

Trailing 3-2 in the top of the seventh with one out, senior Kelly Wallace (Oshkosh, Wisconsin) delivered with a double to left field that advanced junior Taylor Kline (Bellville, Ohio) to third. Murdoch earned a walk in the next at bat to load the bases for Mix, who recorded her second sacrifice fly of the game to score Kline and tie the contest at 3-3. With two outs, sophomore Abby Lamping (Cleves, Ohio) gave the Panthers the go-ahead run on a single that scored Wallace, allowing Ohio Dominican to take a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

Freshman pitcher Cameron Barber (Powell, Ohio) retired the side in the bottom of the seventh, finishing the game with three strikeouts in two innings of work to help the Panthers pick up the victory, 4-3. Lamping went five innings in the circle and allowed just two earned runs. At the plate, Slider finished 3-for-3 with one RBI, while Mix picked up two RBIs on sacrifice flies for the Panthers.

Slider's single in game two sealed a 10-9 win for Ohio Dominican in the second contest of the doubleheader. ODU tied a season-high mark in runs in the contest while also recording 11 hits.

Slider went 2-for-3 in the contest and finished the day 5-for-6 with three RBIs. Wallace went 2-for-4 with five RBIs, punctuated by a grand slam to center field in the bottom of the fourth. Mix finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs, recording four total RBIs in the two contests.

With the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the third with two outs, Mix tripled to right center to score Kline and Wallace and give the Panthers a 4-2 advantage through three.

Lake Erie scored three runs in the top of the fourth to re-take a 5-4 lead, but Wallace would blast a grand slam home run to center field with two outs in the bottom of the fourth to give the Panthers an 8-5 lead.

LEC scored four runs of its own in the top of the fifth and took a 9-8 lead into the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and runners on first and second, sophomore Maria Simmonds (Columbus, Ohio) drew a walk to load the bases for Slider, who singled to right field to score Murdoch from third base and Mix from second, earning the victory for Ohio Dominican, 10-9.

The Panthers will travel to Wheeling Jesuit on Tuesday before hosting Tiffin on Thursday and Findlay on Saturday at Panther Field.
