CLERMONT, Fla. – Ohio Dominican's offense came to life late in both games as the Panthers swept a doubleheader Monday night, defeating Northern State 5-2 and Nyack 7-3 at the NTC Spring Games.
The Panthers (4-8) trailed 2-0 entering the fifth inning against Northern State (6-6) before rallying to win, and ODU used a four-run sixth inning to break free from a tie score and defeat Nyack (0-7).
In the opener, ODU had mustered just two hits and trailed 2-0 before putting up four runs in the fifth. Senior Montana Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio) had an infield single and went to third on a double by freshman Abby Lamping (Cleves, Ohio) to left. After freshman Kylie Dempsey (Liberty Township, Ohio) was plunked by a pitch to load the bases, sophomore Liz Sutter (Mansfield, Ohio) followed with a base hit that scored Fishel.
Sophomore Taylor Kline (Bellville, Ohio) hit a fielder's choice grounder that evened the score at two as Lamping came in to score, and Dempsey and Kline both crossed the plate on an error to put ODU in front 4-2.
Northern State threatened in the bottom half, loading the bases with two outs, but Lamping induced a pop out to herself in the circle to end the inning.
The Panthers earned some breathing room in the sixth as Lamping helped herself with an RBI single that brought in Fishel, and the freshman then retired the side in the bottom of the inning.
Lamping allowed a leadoff single in the seventh, but induced a double play grounder and a line out to end the game and pick up her second complete game win in as many days. She allowed eight hits and the two runs while striking out four batters without issuing a walk. Lamping also threw 58 of her 67 pitches for strikes as she improved to 3-2 on the year.
At the dish, she finished with a pair of hits, as did Fishel, to lead the Panthers.
In the nightcap, ODU built a 3-0 lead over Nyack through five innings. Senior Kelsey Albanese (Westerville, Ohio) started the scoring for the Panthers in the third inning with an RBI single that scored Kline from third. Then, after a single by senior Brier Sanner (Hartville, Ohio), Fishel doubled to left center to score Albanese to give the Panthers a 2-0 edge.
After Nyack answered with three runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 3-3, Ohio Dominican heated up in the bottom of the inning. After Sutter scored on a fielding error to take a 4-3 lead, Albanese tripled to right center with the bases loaded, scoring three runs to give the Panthers a decisive, 7-3 advantage.
Ohio Dominican takes on a pair of Ohio foes on Tuesday as the Panthers take on Urbana at 9 a.m. and Cedarville at 11 a.m. as they continue play at the NTC Spring Games.
