ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 5 ranked Ohio Dominican softball team scratched and clawed their way to victory in the opening round of the NCAA Division ll Midwest Regional Tournament by squeaking out a 3-2 win over No. 4 Truman State on Friday afternoon on the campus of Missouri St. – Louis.
ODU is the first team to win a game NCAA Tournament and now stand at 30-27 on the season.
The Panthers wasted no time in getting their offense going, taking an early 2-0 lead. GLIAC Freshman of the Year Allie Hinton (Newcomerstown, Ohio) connected with the first pitch delivered to her and sent it to deep left center for her eighth homerun and 48th RBI of the season.
The Panthers tacked another run on the board in the top of the second after junior Alex Cribari (Lyndhurst, Ohio) clubbed a one-out double to the left center wall. She would score the Panthers third run after tagging on a fly out by junior Brier Sanner (Hartville, Ohio), and advancing home on a throwing error by the center fielder.
In the bottom of the third, Andrea Klipsch put the Bulldogs on the board with a solo homerun to right center field to cut the lead to 3-1.
Alexis VanNostrand cut the lead to one, 3-2 with a solo shot over the left field wall in the bottom of the fourth.
Trailing by just one run in the bottom of the seventh, the Bulldogs got one aboard but senior Rachael Stanzel (Angleton, Texas) and the ODU defense held on to earn the victory. Stanzel allowed just two runs on five hits.
Offensively, the Panthers registered eight hits with Hinton leading the charge, going 2-for-3 with two RBI, while six other Panthers contributed one knock each.
Ohio Dominican will next play the winner of No. 1 Missouri – St. Louis and No. 8 Bellarmine on Saturday, May 10 at 11 a.m. CST.
