COLUMBUS, Ohio – Outstanding performances by seniors Caitlin Jividen (Wheeling, W. Va.) and Rachael Stanzel (Angleton, Texas) helped the Ohio Dominican softball team clinch at least a share of the GLIAC regular season title with a sweep visiting Malone on senior day at Panther Field. ODU won game one 20-4 in five innings and won game two 13-3 in six innings.
Ohio Dominican finished the regular season at 25-25, which included an impressive 21-5 record in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
In game one, the Pioneers opened the game with a four-run first inning, sending eight batters to the plate. The Panthers however were firing on all cylinders, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first, while sending 12 to the plate.
Stanzel allowed just six hits and four earned runs in 4.0 innings, walking one and fanning three in improving to 18-13 on the year.
The 20 runs was the second-most scored by ODU since 2006 when the Panthers defeated Fisher College 24-0, and the most runs by the Panthers since joining Division II.
After a three-run third inning, that featured a two-RBI blast by junior Taylor Thomas (Bellville, Ohio) to lead the Pioneers 11-4, the Panthers exploded in the fourth. Thomas had an RBI double, and freshman Allie Hinton (Newcomerstown, Ohio) followed with her own RBI double to left field.
Later, junior Alex Cribari (Lyndhurst, Ohio) connected on a 3-1 pitch to knock in three RBI with her first homerun of the season. Sophomore Lizzy Weber (Canton, Ohio) also connected for a two-RBI homerun to left field, her fourth of the season to give the Panthers a 20-4 lead.
Freshman Casey Murdoch (Morrow, Ohio) came in to relieve Stanzel in the fifth where she allowed no hits and struck out two.
Jividen finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Cribari was 3-for-3 with four RBI. Hinton and sophomore Kelsey Albanese (Westerville, Ohio) added three hits and two RBI while Weber and Thomas had two hits and four RBI.
In the nightcap, Thomas blasted her second homerun of the day to left field for the first score of the game.
In the second, a single by sophomore Montana Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio) with bases loaded scored junior Kelsey Seeds (Westerville, Ohio) and a sacrifice fly to left field scored the Panthers second run of the inning to go up 3-0.
The Pioneers scored two runs in the fourth to make it a one run game at 3-2 with a double by Katie Snoddy and a sacrifice fly out to center field by Emily Kahoun.
Ohio Dominican scored three runs to go up 6-2 in the fifth. Hinton laced a single through the left side of the infield and advanced to second on an Albanese single. Seeds roped a double down the left field line to score Hinton and Cribari followed with a two-RBI double.
The Panther bats lit up in the sixth, capitalizing on two Pioneer errors to score seven runs on six hits. Hinton, Seeds, Cribari, and Weber all had RBI for the Panthers.
Malone got a run back in the bottom of the sixth but starter, junior Brandis Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio) got out of the jam to pick up her fourth win of the season.
Montana Fishel had three hits for the Panthers while Jividen, Hinton, Seeds, and Cribari all added two.
