ALLENDALE, Mich. – With a combined 15 hits over two games, the Ohio Dominican softball team swept Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference leader Grand Valley Saturday afternoon by the scores of 7-2 and 1-0.
The Panthers are now 22-24 overall and 18-4 in the GLIAC.
In game one, ODU wasted no time, scoring twice in the first and taking an early 2-0 lead. Senior Caitlin Jividen (Wheeling, W. Va.) laced a double to left center to lead the inning off, followed by an infield single by junior Taylor Thomas (Bellville, Ohio). Freshman Allie Hinton (Newcomerstown, Ohio) continued her hot hitting streak, singling through the right side of the infield to score Jividen. Sophomore Kelsey Albanese (Westerville, Ohio) scored Thomas after grounding out to first.
Albanese knocked in Thomas in the third inning on an infield single to extend the Panthers lead to 3-0.
Grand Valley cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the third when Briauna Taylor homered to centerfield.
The Panther bats lit up in the seventh, scoring four runs on five hits to put the game out of reach for the Lakers. ODU was paced by two RBI from sophomore Lizzy Weber (Canton, Ohio).
Junior Rachael Stanzel (Angleton, Texas) picked up her 15th win of the season after going seven innings with just six hits allowed and three strikeouts.
In game two, there was a combined five hits between the teams as the game featured a pitching duel.
In the second inning, Hinton blasted a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall to score the Panthers only run.
Stanzel allowed just two hits for the remainder of the game and picked up her 16th win of the season. Stanzel allowed three hits while fanning two batters.
Ohio Dominican will conclude the regular season next weekend with a doubleheader against Ashland on Friday, Apr. 25 at 3 p.m.
