BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Ohio Dominican softball team split a pair of games against Ferris State on Thursday afternoon, shutting out the Bulldogs 5-0 in game one and dropping game two 3-2. The Panthers are now 20-24 and 16-4 in the GLIAC.
In the first inning, freshman Allie Hinton (Newcomerstown, Ohio) kept her recent hot hitting streak alive with an RBI double to left field to put the Panthers on the board first.
Junior Taylor Thomas (Bellville, Ohio) extended her hitting streak in the third inning after driving in a run after a double to right field to give ODU a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth, junior Kelsey Seeds (Westerville, Ohio) scored the Panthers third run after crossing the plate on a passed ball.
The Panthers scored their fourth run in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by senior Caitlin Jividen (Wheeling, W. Va.).
Junior Rachael Stanzel (Angleton, Texas) went the distance for the Panthers, allowing no runs on three hits. Stanzel also fanned 10 batters to pick up her 13th win of the spring.
In the nightcap, neither team could generate runs as it took until the fourth inning for anyone to score before Hinton scored the first run on a passed ball, which was unearned.
Ferris State evened the score 1-1 in the sixth after an RBI double by Amy Dunleavy, but Albanese answered with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth with a single up the middle.
With one inning left, the Bulldogs tacked on two runs to take a 3-2 lead and managed to retire the Panthers in order to seal the victory in game two.
Ohio Dominican will conclude its road trip of Michigan with a doubleheader against Grand Valley on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
