COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior Rachael Stanzel (Angleton, Texas) pitched a complete game shutout and tallied a career-high 12 strikeouts as Ohio Dominican's softball team split a Sunday GLIAC doubleheader with Walsh, winning 6-0 in game one before falling 7-5 in game two.
Stanzel allowed just five hits and no walks while punching out 12 in the first game. She threw 77 of her 119 pitches for strikes in improving to 12-11 on the season.
The Panther offense broke open the scoring in the second inning after junior Kelsey Seeds (Westerville, Ohio) reached on an error and junior Alex Cribari (Lyndhurst, Ohio) laid down a perfect bunt up the first base line to move Seeds over.
Junior Brier Sanner (Hartville, Ohio) then lined a single to center field, scoring Seeds.
Sophomore Lizzy Weber (Canton, Ohio) tacked on a run to the ODU lead with her second homerun in as many games when she blasted a 2-1 pitch to left center.
The Panthers kept pushing in the fifth, as junior Taylor Thomas (Bellville, Ohio) homered to center field for a 3-0 lead.
In the sixth, Cribari led off with a single to the infield and Weber moved her to third on a single to the outfield. Cribari would score on a single by sophomore Montana Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio) whoi would later score on senior Caitlin Jividen's two-RBI single to give the Panthers the cushion they needed at 6-0.
Offensively, Jividen was 2-for-3 with two RBI from the plate, while Weber added two hits and Thomas, Sanner, all added a hit.
In game two, ODU was tied 2-2 going into the sixth, but a couple of errors proved costly as Walsh would score five runs in the inning – all of them unearned.
Ohio Dominican, now 18-22 on the season (14-2 GLIAC), will travel to Northwood on Wednesday, Apr. 16 for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
