COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican softball team suffered its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss of the season to the hands of visiting Tiffin University as the Panthers split the twinbill on Wednesday afternoon. ODU won game one 9-1 in five innings and suffered a 4-3 loss in game two.
In the first game, sophomore Montana Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio) drew a leadoff walk to start the first inning. Fishel stole second, and scored on a throwing error by the Dragons during senior Caitlin Jividen's (Wheeling, W. Va.) at bat. Sophomore Allie Hinton (Newcomerstown, Ohio) hit a deep fly ball to right field to score Jividen.
The Panthers went up 4-0 in the bottom of the second thanks to an RBI single by junior Alex Cribari (Lyndhurst, Ohio) and an RBI single by Fishel.
Tiffin earned a run back in the fourth on a double by Kelsey Yaratch.
ODU scored five runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth, and it proved it was all the runs the Panthers needed as pinch hitter freshman Casey Murdoch (Morrow, Ohio) drove in two runs to run rule the Dragons.
Junior Rachael Stanzel (Angleton, Texas) once again had a solid outing, pitching all five innings while allowing seven hits and two strikeouts.
In game two, the Panthers scored the first run of the game in the third inning on a two-out RBI double by Hinton. ODU went up 2-0 in the fourth on a single by sophomore Lizzy Weber (Canton, Ohio).
In the fourth Tiffin responded with three runs to go ahead 3-2. ODU evened the score in the fifth when sophomore Kelsey Albanese (Westerville, Ohio) doubled down the left field line.
Kristin Robinson's homerun in the fifth inning gave the Dragons a 4-3 lead and sealed the fate for Tiffin as the Dragons managed to hang onto the lead.
Ohio Dominican will continue GLIAC action this weekend as the Panthers host Lake Erie on Saturday, April 12 for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. start.
