UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – In a battle of the unbeaten, the Ohio Dominican softball team swept Saginaw Valley 12-6, 6-1 on Saturday afternoon in Michigan.
The Panthers are now 12-20 and a perfect 8-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
In game one, the Panthers jumped on the board first with a two- run first inning. Sophomore Montana Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio) led the inning off with a walk. Senior Caitlin Jividen (Wheeling, W. Va.) singled to center field, advancing Fishel to third. Junior Taylor Thomas (Bellville, Ohio) reached on a fielder's choice, but because there was an infield error by the Cardinals, Fishel scored and Jividen reached safely. Sophomore Kelsey Albanese (Westerville, Ohio) hit a sacrifice bunt down the right field line to score Jividen.
The Cardinals evened the score in the bottom of the second inning, but the Panthers responded in the top of the third after a double steal by Jividen and Fishel.
The ODU bats exploded in the top of the seventh, scoring nine runs on six hits to take a commanding 12-2 lead over the Cardinals.
Junior Rachael Stanzel (Angleton, Texas) allowed just one hit in the bottom of the seventh to put away the Cardinals in game one.
Stanzel picked up the win for ODU, allowing 10 hits over seven innings with two strikeouts. Offensively, Albanese, Jividen and freshman Allie Hinton (Newcomerstown, Ohio) each had two hits to pace the Panthers.
