COLUMBUS, Ohio – Because of unplayable field conditions at Hillsdale, Ohio Dominican found itself playing in its sixth straight home game Sunday afternoon. The hosts did not disappoint, sweeping the Chargers 11-2, 2-1. The Panthers are now a perfect 6-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action and at Panther Field and 10-18 overall.
In game one, every Panther starter registered a hit as ODU went on to beat the Chargers 11-2. Junior Rachael Stanzel (Angleton, Texas) started the first inning with a walk, and advanced to second on a groundout by junior Taylor Thomas (Bellville, Ohio). An infield error during freshman Allie Hinton's (Newcomerstown, Ohio) at bat, allowed Stanzel to score.
In the third inning, ODU tacked on two runs to take a 3-0 lead after a leadoff walk by sophomore Montana Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio). Fishel advanced to second on a groundout by Stanzel and moved over to third after a passed ball. Senior Caitlin Jividen (Wheeling, W. Va.) and Thomas each drew a walk to load the bases. Hinton got a free pass to first, bringing in Fishel. Junior Alex Cribari (Lyndhurst, Ohio) was hit by a pitch, which brought in Jividen.
Hillsdale scored two runs in the fourth to cut ODU's lead 3-2 on homeruns by Sarah Grunert and Kate Ardrey.
In the fifth, Hinton blasted a first pitch two-RBI homerun to take a 5-2 lead over the Chargers. An inning later, the Panther bats caught fire, scoring three runs on four hits for an 8-2 lead. Jividen highlighted the seventh inning with a two-RBI homerun to left center. ODU would score three runs in the seventh to take an 11-2 lead. Stanzel allowed no hits in the bottom of the seventh to seal the first win of the doubleheader.
Stanzel picked up the win for ODU, pitching seven innings while allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Offensively, Jividen was 2-for-3 with RBI while junior Brier Sanner (Hartville, Ohio) added two hits and Hinton added a hit and three RBI.
The score was tighter in the nightcap, with the Panthers pulling out a seventh inning walkoff single to gain the sweep.
Both team's bats were silent through the first two innings, managing just four hits between the two. Hillsdale struck first in the third with an Ardrey single through the left side of the infield. ODU remained silent until the bottom of the sixth when Thomas homered to centerfield to even the score.
With the game knotted at 1-1, Jividen drove in sophomore Lizzy Weber (Canton, Ohio), who pinch ran for junior Brandis Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio) after Fishel hit a one-out single to start the inning. Jividen connected on a 1-1 pitch to double to left field to give the Panthers the walkoff win.
Freshman Casey Murdoch (Morrow, Ohio) received the win for the Panthers, improving her record to 2-4. Brandis Fishel was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate while her sister Montana added two hits and Hinton added two hits.
Ohio Dominican will next host Indianapolis this Wednesday, April 2 for a nonconference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
