COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican softball team capitalized on home field advantage to sweep visiting Findlay 4-2, 4-2 on Friday afternoon at Panther Field. The games were originally scheduled to be played at Findlay, but were moved due to unplayable field conditions.
The Panthers are now 8-18 and a perfect 4-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
In game one, Ohio Dominican jumped to an early 2-0 lead after a senior Caitlin Jividen (Wheeling, W. Va.) single up the middle. Junior Taylor Thomas(Bellville, Ohio) followed with a one-out single to center field, advancing Jividen to second. Freshman Allie Hinton (Newcomerstown, Ohio) hit a two-RBI single to right field, scoring Jividen and Thomas.
In the third, the Panthers added two more runs to extend their lead 4-0 after a one-out single by Thomas. Hinton singled to right center, moving Thomas over to third. Sophomore Kelsey Albanese (Westerville, Ohio) singled through the left side of the infield, scoring Thomas and moving Hinton to third. Hinton scored ODU's fourth run after an infield error by the Oilers.
Findlay cut the lead in half 4-2 in the fifth after a two-RBI single by Megan Turner, but was unable to match the Panthers in the remaining innings.
Junior Rachael Stanzel (Angleton, Texas) went the distance for the Panthers, allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Hinton led the Panthers offensively, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.
In the nightcap, Findlay struck in the first inning when Tori Allen batted in Courtney Dwyer. ODU evened the score in the bottom of the inning when Hinton reached on a fielding error that brought sophomore Montana Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio), who had singled and advanced to third, to score.
The Oilers took a 2-1 lead an inning later after Dwyer hit a two-out RBI single down the right field line, but the Panther bats came alive in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on three Oiler errors to score three runs on two hits. Freshman Kelly Wallace (Oshkosh, Wisc.) started the inning by reaching first on an Oiler infield error, followed by a single by junior Brandis Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio). Wallace advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher, and scored on a groundout by junior Alex Cribari (Lyndhurst, Ohio). Montana Fishel used her speed for an infield single, which allowed her sister Brandis to score the Panthers second, run of the inning. Another infield error by the Oilers allowed Montana to score to give the Panthers their third run of the inning and a 4-2 lead.
The Oiler bats were tamed by the Panther defense, which was highlighted by two diving snags by Jividen at short stop, and the Panthers held onto the win.
Brandis picked up the win for ODU, pitching all seven innings while allowing just three hits.
Ohio Dominican will host Hillsdale on Sunday, March 30 in a GLIAC doubleheader contest starting at 1 p.m.
