COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican softball team capitalized on a perfect sunny day to sweep visiting Lake Superior State 8-3, 8-0 to earn its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference wins of the season.
The Panthers are now 6-18 (2-0 GLIAC) on the season.
Ohio Dominican jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the first after junior Taylor Thomas (Bellville, Ohio) singled to right field. The Panthers would add another run to make the score 2-0 in the second after junior Devan Audette (Bronson, Mich.) blasted a leadoff homerun over the left center wall.
Lake Superior Stated scored a run in the second to cut the lead in half, 2-1.
The ODU bats heated up in the third, scoring four runs on five hits. Thomas hit a leadoff double, which was followed by an RBI double by freshman Allie Hinton (Newcomerstown, Ohio). Junior Kelsey Albanese (Westerville, Ohio) doubled down the left field line, scoring Hinton. Audette tripled to center field, bringing in Albanese. Junior Brier Sanner (Hartville, Ohio) batted in the fourth run for the Panther after a single to right field.
Senior Caitlin Jividen (Wheeling, W. Va.) hit a leadoff homerun to left field in the sixth and junior Alexis Swisher (Cincinnati, Ohio) hit a two-out RBI single through the left side of the infield to extend the Panthers lead to 8-0. The Lakers scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 8-3, but could not overcome the deficit.
Jividen, Hinton, and Audette each had three hits for the Panthers while Thomas and junior Rachael Stanzel (Angleton, Texas) added two hits apiece.
Stanzel went the distance for ODU, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out three batters.
In game two, the Panthers picked up right where they left off, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jividen blasted her second homerun of the day, this time to the opposite side in right center. Thomas doubled to left center and Hinton hit an infield single. Albanese laid down a bunt single to load the bases. Freshman Casey Murdoch (Morrow, Ohio) drew a walk, bringing in Thomas. Freshman Kelly Wallace (Oshkosh, Wisc.) ripped a two-out, two-RBI single down the left field line to bring in Hinton and Albanese.
The following inning, ODU added two more runs to extend its lead 6-0 when Thomas crushed a two-RBI homerun to left field.
Jividen drew a walk in the bottom of the third to bring in junior Brandis Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio) to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead.
Ohio Dominican sealed the win in the bottom of the fifth inning when Jividen ripped an RBI single down the left field line.
Fishel picked up the win for the Panthers, allowing no runs on four hits.
The Panthers will next host North Alabama on Tuesday, March 25 beginning at 2 p.m.
