COLUMBUS, Ohio – After spending a week in Florida at the Rebel Spring Games, the Ohio Dominican softball team is ready to open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play this weekend with a doubleheader against Lake Superior State.
The Panthers will host Lake Superior on Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at Panther Softball Field.
The matchup was scheduled to be played on the road, but due to the bouts of bad weather during the winter, the game has been scheduled to be played in Columbus.
Ohio Dominican (4-18) is 3-2 all-time in GLIAC openers since joining the league for the 2010 season. The Panthers have struggled in their last few outings, save for a 3-0 rout of Glenville State at the Rebel Spring Games on March 14. Junior Kelsey Seeds (Westerville, Ohio) went 3-for-4 from the plate while classmate Taylor Thomas (Bellville, Ohio) was a perfect 2-for-2 with two walks.
Thomas is leading the offensive category for Ohio Dominican, hitting .386 overall with a .526 slugging percentage and a team-leading 12 RBI. She also has three stolen bases in four attempts.
Junior Rachael Stanzel (Angleton, Texas) is fifth in the GLIAC in strikeouts, fanning 39 in 73 innings of work.
Lake State (1-5) is on a four-game losing slide, dropping a 9-3 decision to Azusa Pacific on March 6. Felicia Gingrich paces the Lakers with a .333 average.
