WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Ohio Dominican team went 0-2 in its first day at the Rebel Spring Games in Florida, losing to Adelphia 3-2 and Minnesota Mankato 8-4.
With the two losses, the Panthers are now 1-9 on the season.
In game one, Adelphi jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after a two-out single by Victoria Wink . Katie Andrews singled to right center to bat in Wink.
Sophomore Montana Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio) got the bottom of the first inning started with a one out single through the right side of the infield. Freshman Allie Hinton (Newcomerstown, Ohio) reached on a fielder's choice and Fishel safely reached second after an error by the Panthers second baseman. After a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Kelsey Albanese (Westerville, Ohio), which moved Fishel and Hinton one base, senior Caitlin Jividen (Wheeling, W. Va.) singled, allowing both Fishel and Hinton to score and give ODU a 2-0 lead.
Junior Rachael Stanzel (Angleton, Texas) was dominate through five, fanning two, while surrendering three hits.
The Panthers responded with two runs in the top of the sixth to knot the game 2-2 after Jaclyn Binstock led the inning off with a single to right field. Danielle Cutuli reached on an attempted fielder's choice, advancing Binstock to second, with no outs. Wink batted in the first run after a single to right field, and advanced to second on the throw at the plate. With runners at second and third, Andrews drew a walk to load the bases for Niki Barbato. Barbato reached on a fielder's choice and Andrews advanced to second. Cultili however had to stay at third, due to interference by Wink, ,which resulted in a dead ball. Jordan Catalano singled to center field, hitting in Cutuli for the second run of the inning, which proved to be the decider. Stanzel forced a fly ball and stuck out the final two batters to get out of the inning.
In game two against the Mavericks, ODU jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Fishel reached on a fielder's choice. Junior Alex Cribari (Lyndhurst, Ohio) singled through the right side of the infield, advancing Fishel to third. Freshman Allie Hinton (Newcomerstown, Ohio) singled to left center, scoring Fishel.
The Mavericks scored two runs in the bottom of the second after a two-out- two RBI homerun by the Mavericks put Mankato up 2-1. The Panthers evened the score in the top half of the third inning after a single by Hinton started the inning. A single by sophomore Julia Suyak (Trenton, Mich.) followed by a double to right field by junior Kelsey Seeds (Westerville, Ohio) scored Suyak.
Mankato responded in the bottom of the the third to go ahead 3-2, but ODU scored two runs in the top of the fourth to go ahead 4-3.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Mavericks bats caught fire, scoring five runs on five hits. The five runs proved to be too much for the Panthers, as ODU was not able to overcome the deficit.
Ohio Dominican will return to action on Sunday, March 9, as the Panthers take on Southwest Minnesota State and Northern State.
