Panthers Suffer a Pair of Losses to Trevecca Nazarene

NASHVILLE, TENN. – The Ohio Dominican softball team dropped a pair of games to nonconference opponent Trevecca Nazarene Saturday afternoon. The Panthers lost the first game 5-4 and suffered a 4-3 setback in game two.

In game one, the Knights (10-3) took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Ansley Brantley stole home. Ohio Dominican (1-7) would respond in the top of the third with two runs, to take a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Montana Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio) reached base on a bunt single and junior Rachel Stanzel (Angleton, Texas) followed with a single to left field. Junior Alex Cribari (Lyndhurst, Ohio) loaded the bases on an infield single for junior Taylor Thomas (Belleville, Ohio). Thomas reached on a fielding error by the Knights infield, allowing Fishel and Stanzel to score.

The Panthers extended their lead 4-1 in the top of the fourth when freshman Allie Hinton (Newcomerstown, Ohio) safely reached first on an error by the infield. Junior Brier Sanner (Hartville, Ohio) sacrificed Hinton to second, where she advanced to third on a single to right field by sophomore Lizzy Weber (Canton, Ohio). With Hinton on third and Weber on first, coach Valandingham gave the single for the double steal, which the pair executed to perfection. Stanzel doubled down the left field line to score Weber.

Trevecca Nazarene got a run back in the bottom of the inning to make the score 4-2, when Jordan Griner singled through the right side to score Kelsey Kemp.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Knights tied the game 4-4 after scoring two runs on three hits. The team would score the decisive run in the bottom of the seventh after Haley Fagan hit a two-out single to right field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Heather Shuler singled, which allowed Fagan to score the game winning run.

Stanzel had a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Fishel was also 2-for-3 with two RBI. Cribari, Thomas, and Weber each added a hit. Stanzel suffered the loss for the Panthers. Allowing nine hits and striking out four.

In the second game of the double header, Fishel gave the Panthers their first base runner of the game with a leadoff walk. Cribari sacrificed her at bat to advance Fishel over to second. Sophomore Kelsey Albanese (Westerville, Ohio) hit a one-out double down the left field line to score Fishel and give ODU an early 1-0 lead.

The Knights responded in the bottom of the third when Alex Richardson hit a two-out blast to tie the game at one. Lindsey Stephens followed with a double to right center and scored when Mackenzie Lending singled to right. Heather Shuler drove in Lending on a double down the left field line to give Trevecca Nazarene the 3-1 lead.

ODU tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth when senior Caitlin Jividen (Wheeling W. Va.) led the inning off with a walk. Fishel reached on an infield single, which allowed Jividen to advance to second. Albanese walked to load the bases for the Panthers, followed by a walk by junior Kelsey Seeds (Westerville, Ohio). Hinton hit a two-out single to left field, scoring Fishel and the Panthers third run.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Knights hit the go-ahead run off a Shuler single up the middle.

Trevecca Nazarene managed to hang onto the one run lead, defeating the Panthers by the final score 4-3.

Fishel led the Panthers offensively, going 2-for-3. Albanese, Seeds, and Hinton each added one hit and an RBI. Sophomore Brandis Fishel (Gahanna, Ohio) took the loss for ODU, working 4.1 innings.

Ohio Dominican will stay in Tennessee on Sunday to face Missouri St. Louis in a nonconference match up. Game one is set to start at 11 a.m. and game two is expected to start at 1 p.m. All games are listed in Eastern Standard Time.
