PAINESVILLE, Ohio – After falling to No. 16 Ashland in battle for first place supremacy on Friday evening, the No. 22 Ohio Dominican men's soccer team rebounded with a 3-1 at Lake Erie Sunday afternoon, tightening the grasp on second place in the GLIAC.
Sophomore Justin Wheeler (Gahanna, OH) got the Panthers on the board first with a strike from 15 yards out in the 20th minute for his second goal of the year.
ODU tacked on a second score with just over three minutes remaining in the first as Sean Lipps (Fr./Gahanna, OH) recorded his third tally of the season from 10 yards away off a cross from Suma Kargbo (Jr./Freetown, Sierra Leone).
For the half, the Panthers outshot the Storm 18-2, including 11-1 shots on goal.
Lake Erie cut the deficit to one in the 65th minute as Marco Gaudio redirected an Anthony Belviso pass from about 15 yards out, but that would be as close as the Storm would get.
At the 73:14 mark, senior Pat McGrath (Cincinnati, OH) provided ODU with an insurance goal, connecting on a Kargbo cross from five yards out in front of the net. McGrath's third score of the year ties him for second on the team.
With the win, the Panthers (11-4-1; 8-2-1 GLIAC) remain just one point behind Ashland for the conference lead with one game remaining. ODU steps out of GLIAC play, hosting No. 5 Northern Kentucky at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at Panther Field.
