Cavaliers Grind Out Late Win Over Panthers, 62-58

COLUMBUS - The Ohio Dominican Panthers men's basketball team battled the Walsh Cavaliers in a defensive contest at Alumni Hall on Saturday (Jan. 21) afternoon. 

In a low scoring affair, the Cavaliers outlasted the Panthers 62-58 in a game that featured 16 lead changes and seven ties. 

BOX SCORE NOTES

  • Zach Szul (Waterville, Ohio) led the way with 20 points, including 13 points in the second half. The junior made seven-of-18 shots and five-of-six free throws for the game. After a seven-point first half, Szul hit four-of-eight shots and a perfect four-of-four at the charity stripe. He grabbed three rebounds and picked off two steals. 
  • Jarius Jones (Gahanna, Ohio) benefitted from a fast second half to end with 18 points. He started with five points and ended with 18 with 13 in the second half. He made all four free throws and led the Panthers with eight rebounds and four assists. He was tied for the team lead with two three pointers. 
  • Keshawn Heard (Newark, Ohio) finished with five points and seven rebounds. He had four rejections in the game, part of seven team blocks. 
  • Ethan Haynes (Florence, Kentucky) added four points and six rebounds.
  • Sean Marks (Delaware, Ohio) added two three pointers for six points along with three assists. 
  • For the game, Ohio Dominican shot 33.9% (20-59) compared to Walsh's 32.2% (19-59). The Panthers outshot the Cavaliers with eight to four threes. 
  • Walsh made 20-of-25 free throws, to ODU's ten-of-12 at the line. 
  • ODU had seven blocks with Walsh rejecting three shots total. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Walsh struck first with a basket one minute in before ODU answered with an 8-0 run over the next five minutes. ODU got two threes from Haynes and Jones along with a basket by Szul as the Panthers led 8-2 with 14:43 left.
  • The Cavaliers outscored the Panthers 13-5 over 12 minutes as they tied the game at 15 with 2:26 left to go in the half. 
  • The lead was exchanged four times in the final two minutes as Walsh took a 23-20 lead into halftime. 
  • After halftime, Walsh pushed the lead to as many as nine (35-24) at the 17:00 minute mark. Jones scored five of the next seven points as ODU cut the lead to 36-32 with 15:49 left to go. 
  • Once again, Walsh opened a nine-point lead at 41-32 before ODU went on a 14-5 run to regain the 46-45 lead on a Szul layup with 10:11 left to go in the contest.
    • Jones and Szul each scored four points while Haynes and Marks each made a three pointer. 
  • Neither team would lead by more than three across the final ten minutes until the final second. 
  • Szul put ODU on top three different times in the final four minutes but Walsh answered each time. 
  • The Cavaliers went ahead on a Nic Smith free throw pair with 49 seconds to go, taking the 58-57 lead. 
  • Walsh went on to win 62-58. 

UP NEXT

Ohio Dominican has a week off before they play at Findlay next Saturday (Jan. 28) against the Oilers. Tipoff from Niekamp Arena at Croy Gymnasium is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
