Szul Scores 30 Points, Panthers Fall at Malone, 85-76

CANTON, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican Panthers men's basketball team battled the Malone Pioneers in the first contest of the 2023 calendar year on Thursday (Jan. 5) evening. 

Despite a feisty Panther team having four players in double figures, the Pioneers won the game 85-76 as the Panthers fell to 5-9 overall and 2-6 in conference play. 

BOX SCORE NOTES 

  • Zach Szul (Waterville, Ohio) set a season-high with 30 points in 38 minutes played. The junior shot eight-of-14 from the floor, with five-of-eight from the beyond the arc. He went a perfect nine-of-nine at the free throw line. He set career-highs in assists and three pointers made as he dished out seven dimes and drilled five threes. 
  • Marcus Johnson (Columbus, Ohio) scored 16 points off the bench, his second double-digit game as a reserve this season. He made six-of-ten field goals with a pair each of three pointers and free throws. Johnson led the Panthers with seven rebounds. 
  • Keshawn Heard (Newark, Ohio) and Ethan Haynes (Florence, Kentucky) each scored 12 points with four three pointers. Heard added six rebounds and Haynes grabbed four rebounds while each of them had a block. 
  • Szul scored 15 points in each half for his season-best effort and three short of his career-best of 33. 
  • Ohio Dominican shot 41.0% from the floor, making 25-of-61 shots overall with the team going 14-of-31 in the second half. 
  • ODU made a season-best 15 three pointers and also finished with a 2022-23 high of 91.7% (11-12) at the free throw line. 
  • After turning the ball over six times against Trevecca, Ohio Dominican followed with seven turnovers - the third time with less than ten turnovers. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Malone opened the game with five straight points and concurrently, a 19-8 run over the first five minutes. 
  • Ohio Dominican closed the gap with a 14-6 run to pull within 25-22 with 9:10 left in the first half. Szul hit two three pointers, including the basket to get Ohio Dominican down by a basket. 
  • Over the next seven minutes, Malone expanded the lead to ten twice as they led 43-33 and 45-35 with two minutes left in the period. 
  • Haynes ended the first half with a three pointer as the Panthers trailed 45-38 at halftime.
  • Heard started the second half with a three of his own to make it 45-41 but Malone followed with a 9-3 run to push the lead back to 54-44 in favor of Malone with 16:36 left. 
  • After four points from Johnson and a three pointer from Haynes, ODU continued to pressure the Pioneers as the game became a 54-51 with seven consecutive points at the 15:16 mark. 
  • Malone allowed the Panthers to trail by two twice before a Malone run of 24-10 gave the Pioneers a 82-66 lead with 2:10 remaining, the largest lead of the night for Malone. 
  • The Panthers ended the game with a 10-3 run behind six points from Heard and four from Szul. Malone hung on for a 85-76 win.

Ohio Dominican will host Cedarville one week from Thursday (Jan. 12) for a Great Midwest matchup at Alumni Hall. Tipoff is set for 7:30 PM as part of a home doubleheader.
