Panthers Erase 16-Point Deficit, Defeat Battlers 78-72

COLUMBUS - As a pre-Thanksgiving appetizer, the Ohio Dominican men's basketball team hosted the Alderson Broaddus Battlers at Alumni Hall on Wednesday (Nov. 23) evening. 

The Panthers rallied from 16 points down in the second half to defeat the Battlers 78-72. In the final 13 minutes, the Panthers outscored the Battlers 37-15 as Ohio Dominican improved to 2-2 overall. 

BOX SCORE NOTES

  • Four players finished in double figures for the first time this season.
  • Jarius Jones (Gahanna, Ohio) tallied a game-high 22 points, including 16 of those points in the second half. Jones finished with 11 field goals made of 19 attempts along with nine rebounds, three assists and a block. In the final 20 minutes, Jones shot eight-of-12 from the floor. 
  • Nate Webb (Lafayette, Indiana) scored 13 points off the bench with five rebounds. The junior hit three triples of his five field goals made in the contest. 
  • Kevin James (Massillon, Ohio) came off the bench and gave the Panthers a career-best 11 points in 28 minutes. The freshman knocked down five of his six attempts with the first lead-changing jumper with 5:22 remaining. 
  • Zach Szul (Waterville, Ohio) added a season-high ten points in 32 minutes with four rebounds, four assists and two steals. 
  • Caleb Laurich (Akron, Ohio) put eight points and eight rebounds on the board. 
  • Keshawn Heard (Newark, Ohio) blocked two shots with his eight-point effort. Heard had twos all over the place, with two threes made, two assists and the pair of blocks. 
  • The Panthers shot 61% from the field for the first time since January 25, 2020 against Tiffin (60.3%). Ohio Dominican made 52% of their first half shots (13-25) and followed it up with a 67.7% second half field goal percentage (21-31) - scoring 47 points. 
  • ODU won the overall rebounding battle 37-28 while being outrebounded on the offensive glass, 8-6. 
  • Ohio Dominican blocked five shots in the game, with four different Panthers blocking a shot. Keshawn Heard swatted two shots in the game, leading all players. 
  • The Panthers had 33 bench points. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The two teams exchanged baskets over the first 90 minutes as the game was tied four all. 
  • Six quick points gave Alderson Broaddus a 10-4 lead before an 7-0 Panther run put ODU ahead 11-10 on a Kevin James layup with 13:37 left in the first half. 
  • After AB took back the lead, the Battlers pushed the lead to six twice as ODU could not get within two points. 
  • Alderson Broaddus took a 37-31 lead into the locker room at halftime. 
  • Following the intermission, the Battlers went on a 18-8 run over six minutes to open a 55-39 lead. 
  • Trailing 57-41 with 13:15 left, Ohio Dominican kickstarted a 10-0 run and a 19-4 rally over six minutes to pull within one point, 61-60. Szul had four points on the 10-0 run as four different Panthers scored. Jones added six points as a Keshawn Heard three pointer made it 61-60. 
  • Jarius Jones made a turnaround jumper as ODU pulled back within one, 63-62 with 6:23 to go. One minute later (5:22), Kevin James put the Panthers up 64-63 for the first time since 12 minutes left in the first half.
  • A free throw from AB tied the game at 64 with 5:06 left but Caleb Laurich notched the lead back with a putback layup with 4:28 remaining. 
  • Ohio Dominican opened a six-point lead throughout the final four minutes, including a 78-72 final score. 

UP NEXT

  • The Panthers will host another Mountain East school - Concord on Monday (Nov. 28) at 6:00 PM before heading into conference play on Thursday (Dec. 1) at Walsh.
