Men's Basketball Heads to Ohio Valley to Wrap Up Regular Season


COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team is set for their final regular season contest as they travel to Ohio Valley on Saturday, March 2 with tip set for 3 p.m. in the Snyder Activity Center.

The Panthers are coming into the week with a 16-10 record and a 12-7 conference record after a split week with a loss to Findlay and a win against Hillsdale.

Between the two games, junior Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) had an average of 17.5 points per game while grabbing 14.5 rebounds in 33.5 minutes per game including all 40 against Hillsdale. In that 68-55 win over Hillsdale, Varence led the way with 21 points and 21 rebounds including 17 defensive boards. Varence continues to lead the country in defensive rebounds per game at 9.70 per game and is second in the country in rebounds per game at 12.6.

Over the last eight games which included six starts, senior Ben Casanova (Sylvania, Ohio) has helped Varence control the paint as he has averaged 10 points per game while shooting 59.6% from the floor (34-for-57) and grabbing six rebounds per game.

Senior Ryan Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) continues to lead the G-MAC in three point percentage as he is shooting 48.7% from behind the arc this season. Hoyng is averaging 10.5 points per game this season where he is also tied for the team lead in blocks with 10 and is fourth on the team with 19 steals.

Junior Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) leads the way offensively for the Panthers as he leads the team with an average of 16.8 points per game shooting 44.4% from the floor where he also grabs 4.2 rebounds per game.

In the last meeting with Ohio Valley, the Panthers defeated the Scots 104-76 in a contest played at Alumni Hall back on January 5.

ODU had three players with 20-plus points as Hoyng had 24, Hickey matched that with 24 of his own, and Varence had 21 while grabbing 16 rebounds. ODU hit 13 three pointers which included six from Hoyng and four from Hickey while outrebounding the Scots 48-26 for the game.

The Fighting Scots come into the week with a 9-16 record and 4-15 in the conference as they enter the contest with ODU with three consecutive losses.

Ohio Valley has three players averaging double figures led by Kenneth Miller at 15.4 points while Christian Alley and Ty Dobson are at 13.7 and 11.5 points per game, respectively.

In the previous meeting with the Panthers, OVU had five people reach double-figures as Alley had 16, Miller had 14, Dobson had 12, Cole Plants came off the bench for 13 and Dylan Harrison had 10.

The Scots are first in the conference in blocks per game at 5.0 led by 77 total from David Adeyamo while being second in free throws made at 187. They are also fourth in the conference in steals per game at 7.2.
