Men's Basketball Returns From Break Traveling to West Virginia State Before Hosting Ohio Valley

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Coming off a pair of wins two weeks ago in the Great Midwest Conference, Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team has their last nonconference matchup of the year when they travel to West Virginia State before coming home to host Ohio Valley later in the week.

The matchup with West Virginia State is set for Wednesday, January 2 with tip set for 7:30 at the Walker Convocation Center while the contest with Ohio Valley is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 5.

About Ohio Dominican

ODU is coming off a pair of wins in the G-MAC as they defeated Davis & Elkins 91-61 on the road and hung on to beat Alderson Broaddus 74-70 at home. The Panthers come into the week with an 8-3 overall record and are tied at the top of the conference at 4-1.

Junior Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) was named the G-MAC Player of the Week (12.17) as he averaged 21 points with 23 rebounds over the two games.

In the contest with the Senators, Varence posted the ODU and G-MAC record with 25 rebounds in the contest where he also posted 23 points on 9-for-16 shooting. Varence followed up that performance with a 19 point, 21 rebound game against AB. The junior forward is currently second in Division II with 11.6 rebounds per game.

Fellow junior Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) leads the team in scoring as he scored 23 and 16 in the last two games and is averaging 16.2 points per game. Varence is averaging a double-double with 14.3 points per game with 11.6 rebounds. Also averaging double-figures for the Panthers is sophomore Tahj Curry (Fort Wayne, Indiana) with 11.9 per game.

ODU leads the conference in rebound margin at +8.5 which is also 17th in the country and average just over 30 defensive rebounds per contest which also leads the conference and is ninth in the country.

The Panther defense is giving up 71.6 points per game while the offense is right at 80.0 points per game for an average scoring margin of +8.4.

About West Virginia State

The Yellow Jackets come into the contest with a 4-6 record overall and are 2-4 in the Mountain East Conference.

The only common opponent they Jackets and Panthers have in common is Malone where WVSU lost 78-76 while the Panthers won on the road 81-70.

WVSU has four players that average double-figures as Pat Johnson-Agwu leads the Jackets offense averaging 24.2 points per game while Gus Stone is averaging 17.1.

Also averaging double-figures for the Jackets is Glen Abram averaging 15.8 and Ernest Jenkins with 11.4 per contest.

The Jackets score 85.9 points per game while shooting 48.3% from the floor. However, their defense gives up 87.7 points per game on 48.7% shooting to have a scoring margin of -1.8.

About Ohio Valley

The Scots are coming off a pair of wins throughout the break and are sitting at 5-4 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

Ohio Valley travels to playing Southern Indiana on Sunday before having the week off to come to Columbus on Saturday.

Leading the Scots offense that is averaging 79.7 points per game is Christian Alley who averages 14.6 points per game.

OVU has four others who are averaging double-figures with Kenneth Miller at 12.8, Ty Dobson and David Adeyemo with 11.3 and Dylan Harrison averaging 10.2.

Adeyemo also leads the Scots defense as he has 29 blocks on the season and grabs 7.9 rebounds per game.
