Men's Basketball Storms Past Lake Erie at Home

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team held on to defeat Lake Erie by a final score of 83-78 in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference matchup Saturday afternoon at Alumni Hall.

ODU advances to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference while Lake Erie drops to 6-4 and 3-1 in the G-MAC.

Leading the way for the Panthers was led by sophomore Matt King (Mason, Ohio) who had a career-high 19 points on 7-for-9 shooting along with four rebounds.

Also in double figures for the Panthers was junior Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) who had 18 points with eight rebounds and senior Ryan Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) along with junior Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) each chipped in with 11 apiece.

The first half saw four lead changes and four ties. Hickey caught fire early scoring the first eight points for the Panthers on the way to a quick 8-2 lead.

The game would be tied at 9-9, 11-11, and 18-18 before the Panthers would maintain at least a one point edge the rest of the half.

With the score at 25-24 with 7:36 remaining in the half, ODU closed out the half on a 15-8 run capped off with a Curry jump shot.

The second half saw ODU quickly gain a 10-point edge at 53-43 on a King lay-up with 15:22 remaining.

The Storm would cut the Panther lead to four at 58-54 with 11:32 remaining before a 9-0 run capped by a Hoyng three extended the Panther lead to 13 at 67-54 with 9:09 to play.

Lake Erie would continue to chip away at the Panther lead, cutting it to five at 76-71 with 4:05 remaining.

The Storm would get within two twice in the final two minutes at 77-75 and again at 79-77 but a Curry layup and a Varence hook shot pushed the lead to four each time.

King had 15 second half points to lead the Panther offense while Varence had 12 in the second half. ODU shot 57% (31-for-54) from the floor, their highest of the season, while Lake Erie shot 46% (32-for-69).

The Panthers go on the road to take on Davis & Elkins next Thursday with tip set for 5:30 p.m.
