NORTH CANTON, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's men's basketball dropped an overtime contest by a score of 77-69 at Walsh in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference contest Thursday night in North Canton, Ohio.
The Panthers were led by junior Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) who posted 25 points along with seven boards. Senior Ryan Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) posted 14 points with six rebounds while sophomore Tahj Curry (Fort Wayne, Indiana) had 12 points with six rebounds.
The first half saw the Panther gain an 8-0 edge to tip the game off with a pair of Hickey three pointers and a Curry jumper. Walsh would quickly answer as they cut the Panther lead to one at 14-13 at the 15:00 mark.
With the score 16-15 in favor of the Panthers, a 12-0 Cavalier run gave Walsh a 27-16 advantage before a pair of Hickey free throws with 8:47 remaining in the half ended the Panther drought.
An 11-4 run by the Panthers over the next 5:35 cut the deficit to 31-27 before the Cavs pushed the lead back to five at 36-31 as the teams headed to the locker room.
The second half saw the Cavs push their lead to nine at 42-33 before an 11-2 Panther run capped by a Hoyng three point basket tied the game at 44 apiece with 15:11 remaining.
A 10-2 Cavalier run over the next four minutes gave Walsh a 54-46 lead with 9:41 remaining. The Panthers then went on a 13-1 run to take their first lead of the half at 59-55. The run was capped by an old-fashioned three point play from Curry and a layup from Hoyng with 3:32 remaining.
ODU held a 63-58 lead with 21 seconds remaining before a foul on a three in which Straughter made all three to cut the Panther lead to two. A Panther turnover gave the Cavaliers a chance to tie the game as Shuate did with a layup with three seconds remaining. A Michael Scott (Hebron Kentucky) half-court heave went begging and the Panthers and Cavs went to overtime.
In overtime, Walsh jumped out to a 6-0 run and with the Cavs leading 69-63, ODU would cut the deficit to two on a Hickey three to make the score 71-69 with 1:32 remaining. Walsh would make six free throws down the stretch while not allowing another point to close out the contest.
ODU drops to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the G-MAC while Walsh advances to 4-3 and 1-0 in the conference.
Walsh was led by JT Shumate who has 25 points while Darryl Straughter had 20 and Sterling Christy had 17.
The Panthers remain on the road in G-MAC action as they travel to Malone on Saturday, December 1 with tip set for 3 p.m.
