Men’s Basketball Grinds Out Critical Great Midwest Win At Cedarville, 63-58

CEDARVILLE, Ohio — Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team earned a 63-58 victory at Cedarville on Saturday night in a crucial Great Midwest Athletic Conference game.

The Panthers (13-10, 8-8 G-MAC) are fighting for a spot in the eight-team Great Midwest tournament and Saturday's win over the Yellow Jackets puts ODU in sixth place in the G-MAC with just two weeks left in the regular season.

Despite shooting 33.3 percent from the field, Ohio Dominican made 10-of-25 three-point field goal attempts (40 percent) and limited Cedarville to just 4-of-23 shooting from behind the arc (17.4 percent). ODU committed just nine turnovers for the game and grabbed 13 offensive rebounds, the second-most for the squad in a game this season.

Senior Ronnie Williams (Columbus, Ohio) led the Panthers in scoring with 14 points off the bench on 4-of-7 shooting from three-point range. Williams now boasts 227 made three-pointers in his career and needs just 10 more to move into third place all-time in ODU men's basketball history for made triples.

Senior Shemar Waugh (Columbus, Ohio) scored 13 points and made a career-high three triples while going 4-of-4 from the free throw line. In his last four games, Waugh is shooting 21-of-23 from the charity stripe. Sophomore Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) scored 11 points and grabbed a career-high six rebounds, while sophomore forward Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) tallied eight points and 11 rebounds to mark his fourth-straight game of 10 rebounds or more.

Leading 58-56, senior Mike DeLeon (Powell, Ohio) grabbed an offensive rebound on a missed three-point attempt and dished the ball to Waugh, who buried a three-pointer to increase the Panther lead to 61-56 with 2:11 to go.

Cedarville (11-12, 6-10 G-MAC) hit two free throws with 44 seconds to play and had a chance with time winding down to tie the game. Cedarville's Colton Linkous attempted a triple with four seconds to go, but solid defense on the perimeter by Hickey forced the miss and Waugh secured the rebound, icing the game with two free throws to earn the 63-58 win.

ODU will return home for its final four games of the regular season, hosting Hillsdale and Lake Erie next week in Alumni Hall.
