Waugh’s Buzzer-Beater Lifts Men’s Basketball Past Walsh, 90-88 2OT

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Dominican senior point guard Shemar Waugh (Columbus, Ohio) saw his jumper from just above the free throw line roll in as the final horn sounded, earning a hard-fought, 90-88 double overtime win for ODU over Walsh on Tuesday night in Alumni Hall.

With 6.7 seconds to go in the second overtime, Walsh's Darryl Straughter was fouled and made two free throws to tie the game at 88. Waugh took the ensuing in-bound pass and raced to the other end, pump-faking a Walsh defender before firing the jumper. The ball bounced around the cylinder before finding its way through the bottom of the net, sealing the victory for the Panthers by a final mark of 90-88 2OT.

"It felt really special," said Waugh in reference to hitting the game-winning shot. "It bounced two times. When it went through, I just felt joy."

T The win marks the third-straight G-MAC victory for ODU (11-9, 6-7 G-MAC), the fourth win in their last five tries and the first overtime victory for the squad since a 70-64 OT win over Wayne State on January 17, 2015. The Panthers shot 52.3 percent for the game while holding Walsh to just 39 percent shooting from the floor. Ohio Dominican shot 40 percent from three-point range (8-of-20) while limiting the Cavaliers to just 21.7 percent from behind the arc (5-of-23).

Notching his sixth double-double of the season was sophomore forward Hasan Varence (Queens, New York), recording 18 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, including 12 defensive boards. Sophomore Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) scored 17 points off the bench and also notched five rebounds. Sophomore Ryan Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) tallied 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Waugh finished with 12 points, sophomore Michael Scott (Hebron, Kentucky) scored a career-high 10 points off the bench and senior Mike DeLeon (Powell, Ohio) also scored 10 off the bench for the Panthers.

Walsh led 73-72 with 46 seconds remaining in the second half, but a layup by DeLeon on an assist from Waugh gave the Panthers a 74-73 lead. A free throw for the Cavaliers with 39 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 74, with both teams forcing stops on the defensive end to send the game into overtime.

In the first overtime trailing 79-77 with 1:16 to go, Hickey connected on a jump shot to tie the game at 79. Once again, both teams forced several stops in the final moments of the period, sending the contest into a second overtime.

Then with 32 seconds to play, Varence connected on a layup with an assist to DeLeon to put ODU in front, 88-86. Straughter's free throws with just under seven seconds remaining tied the game at 88, but Waugh's jumper as time expired gave the Panthers a key, Great Midwest win.
