Men’s Basketball Returns Home To Host Ohio Valley


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Following a three-game road swing that resulted in two victories, Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team returns to Alumni Hall this Thursday, January 25 to host Ohio Valley at 5:30 p.m. in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference clash in Alumni Hall.

ODU is coming off one of its best defensive efforts of the season in a 65-53 win at Lake Erie this past Saturday. The Panthers (9-9, 4-7 G-MAC) held the Storm to just 18 field goals, marking a season-low for ODU opponents. Ohio Dominican also held a 43-33 rebounding advantage and limited LEC to just 34.6 percent shooting from the field.

With an opponent's average of just 69.6 points per game, ODU's defense ranks third in the Great Midwest and 48th in the nation in scoring defense, with the opposition shooting just 41.8 percent. On the offensive end, the Panthers share the ball better than any team in the conference. ODU ranks first in the G-MAC and 31st in the country in assists at 16.9 per game. The Panthers are also accurate from behind the arc, shooting 37.9 percent from three-point range to come in at second in the Great Midwest in three-point shooting.

Ohio Dominican continues to feature a balanced scoring attack on the offensive end, with four Panthers averaging in double figures. Sophomore forward Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) posts averages of 14.1 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.  Varence has recorded five double doubles this season and has led the Panthers in scoring on nine different occasions and has led the team in rebounding in 12 games this season. Senior guard Ronnie Williams (Columbus, Ohio) is scoring 12.1 points per game and ranks first in the Great Midwest in three-point field goal percentage at 42.1 percent. Williams has made at least three triples in four-consecutive games, shooting 14-of-25 from downtown during the span, including 12-of-18 shooting from long range in the first halves of those contests. Sophomore guard Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) averages 11.8 points per game off the bench, while senior point guard Shemar Waugh (Columbus, Ohio) posts averages of 11.5 points and 4.3 assists per game.

Following Thursday's game against OVU, the Panthers will prepare for Walsh, Trevecca and Kentucky Wesleyan next week.
