COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team will travel to West Virginia this week for Great Midwest Athletic Conference matchups with conference opponents Davis & Elkins and Alderson Broaddus.
The Panthers (7-8, 2-6 G-MAC) will take on D&E this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. before heading to AB Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest.
ODU is on the road for its next three G-MAC games before returning home on January 25 to host Ohio Valley. The Panthers were defeated by Findlay and Cedarville last week, falling by seven points in both games. Seven of Ohio Dominican's eight defeats have come by eight points or less, and the Panthers are 7-0 in games when they shoot 50 percent or better from the field this season.
The Panthers share the ball at an extremely high level. At 17.5 assists per game, ODU ranks first in the Great Midwest and 26th in the nation in assists per contest. Four Panthers are currently averaging double figures in scoring. Sophomore forward Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) leads the squad in scoring and rebounding at 13.3 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. Varence has started in all 15 contests for ODU and is shooting 50.9 percent from the field. Senior guards Ronnie Williams (Columbus, Ohio) and Shemar Waugh (Columbus, Ohio) are averaging 11.9 points and 11.2 points per game, respectively. Sophomore guard Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) is also putting up double figures in scoring, ranking third on the team in points per game at 11.6 per contest.
Junior Ben Casanova (Sylvania, Ohio) and sophomore Ryan Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) are both shooting over 48 percent from the field and 43 percent from behind the arc. Casanova is averaging 6.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game while shooting 56.1 percent from the field, 45.5 percent from three-point range and 85.7 percent from the free throw line. Hoyng is scoring 5.7 points per game and has scored in double figures in three of the last four contests for the Panthers.
