Men’s Basketball Surges Past Walsh, 85-75

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Six Panthers scored in double-figures and Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team outscored Walsh 50-36 in the second half en route to an 85-75 win over the Cavaliers at Alumni Hall in a GLIAC South clash on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, ODU (11-7, 6-6 GLIAC) has won four of its last six GLIAC contests and defeats Walsh at Alumni Hall for the second-consecutive season.

The Panthers shot 51.6 percent from the field and connected on 11 of their 13 free throw attempts. The game marked the first time this year that all five starters scored in double-figures for ODU. The Panthers held a 22-9 edge in bench points, scored 21 points off Walsh turnovers and held a 44-32 advantage in points in the paint.

ODU was led by freshman Hasan Varence (Queens, New York), who scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds, including four offensive boards. Junior Ronnie Williams (Columbus, Ohio) scored 14 points, 12 of which came in the second half. Junior Shemar Waugh (Columbus, Ohio) recorded 12 points and four assists. Junior Adam Cytlak (Van Buren, Ohio) scored 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field and dished out a team-high five assists, also grabbing four rebounds. Junior Mike DeLeon (Powell, Ohio) recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds, his first double-double of the season, and freshman Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) scored 10 points off the bench for ODU.

Walsh held a 39-35 advantage heading into the locker room and led 42-37 at the 19:07 mark of the second half, but a three-pointer by Williams sparked a 19-8 run over the next 3:58, as Cytlak scored on a layup with 15:09 to go to give Ohio Dominican a 56-50 lead.

ODU held a 62-61 lead with 10:54 to go, when two free throws by Varence sparked an 11-3 run, as Williams hit a three-pointer with 6:39 left to push the Panther lead to 73-64.

Walsh could not cut into the Ohio Dominican lead in the final 6:39, as the Panthers held firm for an 85-75 GLIAC South victory.

With the win, ODU earns its sixth GLIAC victory of the season, and will look to build on its momentum when the squad travels to Hillsdale on Saturday, January 28 at 3 p.m.
