Men’s Basketball Drops Road GLIAC South Contest At Ashland, 62-59

ASHLAND, Ohio — Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team dropped a road GLIAC South contest at Ashland on Thursday night, falling 62-59 at Charles Kates Gymnasium.  

ODU (9-6, 4-5 GLIAC) led by as many as 19 points, but could not sustain its lead, as the Eagles outscored the Panthers 41-23 in the second half.

The Panthers held Ashland to 35.8 percent shooting from the field and 35.3 percent shooting from three-point range and forced the Eagles into 13 turnovers. But offensively, Ohio Dominican shot just 39.2 percent from the field and just 29.4 percent from three-point range.

Junior Shemar Waugh (Columbus, Ohio) scored a team-high 14 points, shooting 8-of-10 from the free throw line. Freshman Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) recorded 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Freshman Ryan Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) scored 11 points off the bench, and junior Ronnie Williams (Columbus, Ohio) scored 10 points for Ohio Dominican.

ODU led 36-21 at halftime and led until the 3:09 mark of the second half, when two Eagle free throws gave Ashland a 56-55 lead.

Trailing 58-56 with 56 seconds to go, junior Adam Cytlak (Van Buren, Ohio) hit a deep three-pointer to give ODU a 59-58 lead. But the Eagles answered on the offensive end with a made layup by Boo Osborne, taking a 60-59 lead that they would not relinquish. Osborne hit two free throws after a missed ODU three-pointer to give Ashland a 62-59 lead with 19 seconds to go, and ODU could not score on the offensive end, falling by a final score of 62-59.

ODU will look to get back in the win column when it hosts Tiffin at Alumni Hall in a GLIAC South clash on Saturday at 3 p.m.
