Men’s Basketball Falls Just Short Against No. 7 Saginaw Valley, 76-69

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Michigan — Seventh-ranked Saginaw Valley outlasted Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team, 76-69 in a GLIAC contest on Sunday.

ODU (6-5, 2-4 GLIAC) trailed 68-56 with 4:15 remaining when junior Mike DeLeon (Powell, Ohio) hit a jump shot to begin an 8-0 run for the Panthers over the next 2:55. Trailing by 10, DeLeon connected on another jumper with 2:43 to go, then junior Ronnie Williams (Columbus, Ohio) connected on a layup 30 seconds later to bring the Panthers to within six, 68-62 with 2:13 to go. Freshman Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) continued the run with a jump hook from the right block with 1:20 remaining, cutting Saginaw Valley's lead to just four, 68-64.

But the Cardinals scored eight points in the final 1:20, outlasting ODU's comeback effort, 76-69.

The Panthers forced 17 Saginaw Valley turnovers and held the Cardinals to just 40 percent shooting from the field and 29.4 percent shooting from three-point range (5-of-17). Ohio Dominican also held a decisive, 46-26 advantage in points in the paint.

Varence led the Panthers with his third double-double of the season, finishing with 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting and 11 rebounds. Williams recorded 16 points, four rebounds and four assists. Junior Adam Cytlak (Van Buren, Ohio) chipped in with 11 points, and sophomore Ben Casanova (Sylvania, Ohio) recorded 10 points and five rebounds off the bench for the Panthers.

Ohio Dominican will return to Alumni Hall to face Shawnee State in its next contest on Friday, December 30 at 7 p.m.
