Men’s Basketball Travels To Johnson C. Smith For First Contest Of Regular Season


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Following an exhibition contest with Toledo this past Saturday, Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team prepares to face Johnson C. Smith on Saturday, November 12 at 4 p.m. in its first regular season contest of the 2016-17 season.

About Ohio Dominican

The Panthers (0-0, 0-0 GLIAC) are coming off an exhibition game at Toledo in which they fell by a final score of 94-79 in a contest that featured 10 ties and 15 lead changes. Ohio Dominican was within four at halftime, trailing 45-41 heading into the locker room, but the Rockets held a 49-38 scoring advantage in the second half to surge ahead and earn a 94-79 victory.  

Junior Shemar Waugh (Columbus, Ohio) led the Panthers with 26 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the field, also dishing out a team-high four assists in 35 minutes of play. Junior Ronnie Williams (Columbus, Ohio) scored 17 points, and freshman Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) added 11 points on three-of-six shooting from three-point range in his Panther debut.

Following its contest with Johnson C. Smith on Saturday, Ohio Dominican will host Seton Hill on Tuesday, November 15 and St. Joseph's (Ind.) on Saturday, November 19.

The Panthers have six regular season games in the month of November and went 3-3 in the first month of the season a year ago. Under Head Coach Dan Evans, the Panthers are 6-9 in November.

Ohio Dominican is looking to earn its third season opening win in the last four years, defeating Maryville (Mo.) 84-69 to begin the 2015-16 season.

Johnson C. Smith University is located in Charlotte, North Carolina and reported an enrollment of 1,452 in fall 2015.

The Golden Bulls (0-0, 0-0 CIAA) finished with an overall record of 14-12 (9-7 CIAA) last season and boasted a 10-1 home record in 2015-16, including a 3-0 home record against non-conference opponents. Johnson C. Smith captured the CIAA Southern Division title last season and since 2013-14, the Golden Bulls have gone 46-38 overall.

Junior Robert Davis is the top returning scorer for the Golden Bulls, averaging 10.1 points per game a season ago to rank fourth in scoring on the squad.   

The Golden Bulls averaged 82.3 points per game a season ago to rank first in the CIAA with a 47.4 shooting percentage, which ranked second in the conference.

ODU faces Johnson C. Smith for the first time on Saturday, November 12 at 4 p.m. at Brayboy Gymnasium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
