Weaver Scores 21 As Panthers Fall at Ashland 77-64

ASHLAND, Ohio – Senior Trent Weaver (Columbus, OH) recorded a team high 21 points and 11 rebounds, but Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team faltered at Ashland on Thursday evening, 77-64.

Weaver entered the ballgame in the top 25 in the NCAA in double-doubles, as he added to his total versus Ashland, giving him nine double-doubles this season and 27 in his career.

Senior Chad Nelson (Columbus, OH) added 11 points and four rebounds. Sophomore Ronnie Williams (Columbus, OH) scored seven of his nine points in the second half.

With a team high five assists, sophomore Shemar Waugh (Columbus, OH) pitched in seven points and four rebounds.

In a first half of runs, Ashland jumped out to the early lead, scoring the opening nine points of the game, making each of its first four attempts from the field.

After falling behind by 12 points, the Panthers used a 7-2 run to close the gap to 18-11 with 12:10 remaining in the opening stanza. The Eagles however answered with a 7-0 spurt to take its largest lead of the half at 25-11 with 8:50 left to play.

It was then Ohio Dominican's turn to make a run, as they scored 14 of the next 17 points to close the AU lead to 28-25 with 1:47 remaining before the intermission. Including the 14-3 run, the Panthers closed the first half with 17 of the final 26 points, as they trailed 34-28 at halftime.

Though the Panthers shot just 34.6 percent from the field in the opening half, ODU capitalized on its opportunities at the charity stripe, making 7-of-8 attempts.

The second half saw Ohio Dominican grab its first lead of the game as a Weaver three point play capped a 9-2 run, giving the Panthers a 37-36 advantage with 16:04 remaining. The Black and Gold made four of their first seven attempts from the floor in the second half.

Ashland quickly regained the lead at 42-38 with a 6-1 spurt. Similar to a season ago in Kates Gymnasium where the Panthers trailed by eight points with 8:00 minutes left, ODU found themselves down 56-47 with 8:05 remaining.

A Williams three pointer and a layup from freshman Ben Casanova (Sylvania, OH) pulled the Panthers within three points at 63-60 with 4:06 remaining.

However, unlike the meeting last season where ODU fell by one point in the final minute of play, the Eagles held the Panthers to just four points over the final four minutes, taking the win, 77-64.

ODU finished the contest at 36.2 percent from the field. Ashland posted a 45.6 percent shooting clip, and both teams shots under 30 percent from three point range. The Eagles also enjoyed a 12-2 advantage in fast break points.
