COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's basketball team dropped its conference opening game on the road Saginaw Valley State on Thursday evening, 90-72.
The Panthers (3-4, 0-1 GLIAC) have now fallen in each of the past two seasons to Saginaw Valley to open conference play after defeating the Cardinals (3-2, 1-0 GLIAC) 76-69 on the road during the 2013-14 season.
Senior Trent Weaver (Columbus, OH) recorded his third consecutive double-double and fifth of the season with a team high 20 points and 12 rebounds. Weaver has now scored at least 10 points in 12 straight games dating back to last year.
Scoring in double figures for the third straight contest was sophomore Shemar Waugh (Columbus, OH) as he added 15 points. Waugh also tied for the team high in assists with three, his 15th game in the last 16 tries with at least three helpers.
Sophomore Mike DeLeon (Powell, OH) added 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting as he has now shot at least 50 percent from the field in each of the first seven games this season. Returning from injury, freshman Michael Simon (Hilliard, OH) led ODU in bench scoring with a career best eight points.
For the seventh time this season the Panthers outrebounded their opponent, holding a 43-42 advantage over the Cardinals.
A Weaver dunk gave ODU a 6-4 advantage less than three minutes into the game, but over the next five minutes SVSU scored 20 of the next 21 to take a 24-7 lead with 13 minutes remaining in the opening half.
The Cardinals grew their lead to as many as 25 points in the opening half as they took a 50-29 advantage into the locker room.
The deficit was extended to as many as 29 in the second stanza, but a 24-12 run by the Panthers over the final 7:43 gave ODU a 43-40 advantage in scoring during the second half.
Ohio Dominican will look to even up its overall and conference records with a 3 p.m. tip-off at Hillsdale on Saturday, December 5.
