ST. LOUIS – Behind a dramatic buzzer beating jump shot in the closing seconds, Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team improved to 2-0 with a 64-62 victory over Truman State at neutral site Maryville Saturday afternoon.
With shades of Duke-Kentucky in the 1992 NCAA Division I tournament, sophomore Mike DeLeon (Powell, OH) launched an inbounds pass the length of the floor with just 1.9 seconds remaining and the score tied at 62-62. His pass connected with senior Trent Weaver (Columbus, OH), who caught it at the right elbow, turned and hit a fade away jumper, sending the Panthers to victory.
After a layup from senior Chad Nelson (Columbus, OH), which gave the Panthers (2-0) a 62-57 with 2:39 left to play, Truman (1-1) responded with five straight points, including two free throws and a three pointer, to tie the game at 62-apiece with 59 seconds remaining.
A missed jumper by Nelson with 30 seconds left and a missed layup by the Bulldogs with four seconds remaining set up the play in which the Panthers executed in the final two seconds.
Weaver posted his second consecutive double-double this season as he scored a team high 24 points while grabbing a team best 12 rebounds. Weaver finished the contest a career best 12-of-13 from the field and now has 20 career double-doubles.
Sophomore Shemar Waugh (Columbus, OH) added 13 points for ODU and also pulled down six rebounds. DeLeon finished the contest with a team high six assists while scoring six points and grabbing nine rebounds. DeLeon also posted a career high three steals.
Nelson added nine points, while sophomore Ronnie Williams (Columbus, OH) pitched in nine more points off the bench.
The Panthers jumped out to a quick 15-6 lead after a Nelson three pointer at the 14:28 mark of the opening half. The Bulldogs rallied to tie the contest at 17-allwith 10:28 left in the first half. Truman would gain its largest lead of the game, two, at 21-19 with 7:07 remaining in the opening period.
Two free throws from Waugh would erase the Bulldog lead, as it was the last time that they led in the contest. Ohio Dominican closed out the first half with a 12-6 run to take a 33-27 lead into the break.
The second stanza would see the Panthers grow their lead to as many as 10 with Williams knocking down a three pointer to give ODU a 47-37 advantage with 12:26 left to play.
A 13-5 Truman run over the next six minutes cut the Panther lead to 52-50 with just over six minutes remaining.
Ohio Dominican shot 45.8 percent (27-of-59) from the field while holding the Bulldogs to 23-of-56 from the field (41.1 percent). The Panthers also had a 39-29 advantage in rebounds.
For the second game in a row ODU feasted in points in the paint, bettering last night's mark by four with 42 against Truman.
The Panthers will look to record their first 3-0 start in the NCAA Division II era when they travel to face Notre Dame (OH) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 18.
