Men's Basketball Picked Fifth in GLIAC South, Receives Two All-GLIAC Selections

BAY CITY, Mich. – The Ohio Dominican men's basketball team has been picked to finish fifth in the GLIAC South during the 2015-16 season, and has a record high two Preseason All-GLIAC selections.

Seniors Trent Weaver (Hilliard, OH) and Chad Nelson (Pickerington, OH) have each been selected to All-GLIAC Preseason teams with Weaver becoming the first Panther to record a first team selection. The two choices is the most ODU has had since entering the GLIAC, and is one of just three schools in the South Division to receive multiple honors. Nelson joins Weaver from last season, Morgan Jones, 2012-13, and Aaron Gibbs, 2011-12, to be picked as a second team preseason member.

The Panthers received 45 total points to be projected in the fifth spot, one point ahead of Lake Erie. The fifth position is the highest ODU has ever received in the preseason GLIAC poll. Ashland received eight first place votes and 103 points, to be proclaimed as the team to beat in the GLIAC South. Findlay logged 102 total points and five first place votes to come in second, while Walsh, 99, and Wayne State, 60 rounded out the top four. In the GLIAC North three teams received first place votes as Saginaw Valley State is predicted to finish first, receiving 13 first place votes and 108 points.

Coming off its best season at the Division II level and in the GLIAC, the Black and Gold looks poised to make the next jump in Year Three under head coach Dan Evans. ODU will look to rely on its top two returning scorers. Leading the team in scoring last season at 13.7 per game, Weaver also led the team in rebounding, grabbing eight per contest. Weaver enters the 2015-16 campaign eighth in school history in rebounds with 543. He also comes in at number seven in ODU history in free throw makes, 261, and free throw attempts, 344.

Nelson averaged 13.5 points per game a year ago as he shot over 40 percent from the field, while also dishing out close to three assists a game. With 95 career makes from three-point range, Nelson sits just 14 shy of cracking the top 10 in school history.

The two seniors have combined to appear in 161 games, including 136 starts, and each has an opportunity to join 20 other Panther players in the 1,000 career point club.

ODU also returns a group of sophomores which gained a bevy of experience during the 2014-15 campaign as Shemar Waugh (Columbus, OH), Ronnie Williams (Columbus, OH), Mike DeLeon (Powell, OH), and Adam Cytlak (Van Buren, OH) each played a role for the Panthers, combining for 58 starts and over 2,300 minutes played.

In their first season with ODU a year ago, Williams and Waugh ranked third and fourth on the team in scoring averages at 8.5 and 7.6 respectively. Williams led the team in three point shooting percentage at 42.2 percent, while Waugh dealt out a team high 3.3 assists per contest.

DeLeon averaged 7.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per contest in his freshman campaign, recording two double-doubles on the season.

The recruiting class for the Panthers includes six athletes which combined for three All-Ohio, four All-District, and five All-League selections in their senior seasons. These six players, along with redshirt freshman Alex Stevens (Delaware, OH) will look to work themselves into the rotation throughout their first season of action.
