Men's Basketball Falls Late on Senior Night, 66-62

COLUMBUS, Ohio – After leading for most of the game, the Ohio Dominican men's basketball team fell late to Tiffin 66-62 in a GLIAC contest on Senior Night inside Alumni Hall on Thursday.

With the score tied at 53-all, Ronnie Williams (Columbus, OH) would make two free throws to give the Panthers (8-18, 6-15 GLIAC) a 55-53 advantage with just over five minutes remaining.

The two teams would trade baskets a few times before Tiffin (8-20, 4-17 GLIAC) took their first lead of the contest at 61-59 with 1:32 left to play.

In the final 1:32, the Panthers would only get one free throw from Shemar Waugh (Columbus, OH) and a layup from Mike DeLeon (Powell, OH) as the Dragons would make 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

The lone senior for the Panthers, Jesse Ward (North Pole, AK), flirted with a double-double, scoring nine points, as he also grabbed a career high nine rebounds.

Juniors Trent Weaver (Columbus, OH) and Chad Nelson (Columbus, OH) were the two Panthers to record a double figure scoring game. Weaver scored a team high 14 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Nelson added 12 points.

Freshmen Shemar Waugh (Columbus, OH) and DeLeon came off the bench to add 17 points and 10 rebounds combined. Waugh finished with nine points and three rebounds, while DeLeon recorded 8 points and seven rebounds.

The Panthers shot just 22-of-65 (33.8 percent) from the field for the game and after holding the Dragons to just 37.0 percent in the first half, Tiffin finished the game 25-of-55 (45.5 percent). ODU tied a season low with just five turnovers as they forced Tiffin into 14, which turned into 14 points for the Panthers.   

Though ODU started the game making just two of its first eight shots, ODU's defense propelled them to a quick 7-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game.

The Panthers would hold their largest lead of the opening half at 12-6 after an Adam Cytlak (Van Buren, OH) three pointer with 12:34 remaining before the break.

Tiffin would climb back into the game and tie the score 18-18 with 5:32 left before halftime. ODU, however outscored the Dragons 9-5 over the last 5:32 to take a 27-23 lead into the intermission. The Panthers never trailed in the first half.

The Dragons would open the second half on a 7-3 run, but the Panthers answered with an 8-2 run of their own, capped by a Nelson layup to give the Panthers a 38-32 lead with 14:54 left to play.

A Nelson three pointer would give the Panthers a 47-40 with 10:01 remaining. Then a few possessions later, ODU would take its largest lead, eight, at 53-45 after two free throws from Weaver with 7:37 left in the second half.

The Black and Gold will have one final game remaining for the 2014-15 season on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. as they travel to Tiffin to complete the home and home series this week.
