TIFFIN, Ohio – Despite the late second half push, the Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team fell to Tiffin 98-92 in Gilmor Student Center Saturday afternoon in GLIAC South Division action.
The Panthers entered Tiffin's gym slightly warmer than the weather outside, nailing three treys in the first four minutes, which led to an early 11-6 lead.
ODU opened the half with a layup from senior point guard Morgan Jones (Oberlin, Ohio). After that basket, the Panthers had back-to-back treys by senior forward John Trew (Barberton, Ohio), followed by back-to-back three-pointers by freshman guard Chad Nelson (Pickerington, Ohio). Jones followed up the string of three-pointers with one of his own to give ODU a 17-11 lead with 14:37 left to play.
Back to back baskets by freshman center Jordan Cowgill (Worthington, Ohio) put the Panthers back on top 21-19 to play with 12:16 left, but the Dragons would rally at the 8:05 mark and tie the score for the fifth time in the half at 30 each.
The Dragons then went on a 15-8 run to take their largest lead of the half at seven to close out the frame 45-38. Trew with eight, Stauffer with seven and Jones with six paced the Panthers first half scoring parade.
ODU shot 54.2 percent from the field (13-of-24 shooting) while hitting 5-of-9 from behind the three-point line (55.6 percent).
Tiffin opened the second half with a 9-0 run to push the lead to 54-38, which at the time seemed safe. However, the Panthers scratched and clawed their way back and chipped away at the Dragons, getting within four, 96-92 after Jones hit a big three from the right side of the court with 12 seconds to play.
However, the Panthers were forced to foul, sending Joe Graessle to the foul line for a pair. Graessle hits both and the Dragons sealed the win, 98-92. The loss by the Panthers dropped their record to 4-16 (1-14 GLIAC), while Tiffin improved to 8-13 (5-10 GLIAC).
Sophomore center Bobby Stauffer (Lexington, Ky.) led a quintet of Panthers in double digits, scoring a career-high 24 points, pulling down eight rebounds, and four assists. Jones ended the game with 22 points while Trew totaled 12 points and eight rebounds. Cowgill chipped in 10 points off the bench. Tiffin's Joe Graessle led all scorers with 36 markers.
ODU ended the game shooting their highest percentage of the season, hitting 34 of their 60 attempts for 56.7 percent. The Panthers also hit a season high 12 three-pointers for 48 percent (12-of-25).
The Panthers will return to the hardwood on Thursday, Feb 7 and Saturday, Feb 9 as they welcome Findlay and Hillsdale to Columbus, Ohio for a 5:30 and 1 p.m. matchup.
