Panthers Head to Tiffin to Battle Dragons

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's basketball team will travel to Tiffin University this Saturday, where they will get their first look at the Dragons.  Tipoff for the South Division matchup is scheduled for 1 p.m.

About the Panthers

ODU went 1-1 last week, defeating Ashland 75-71 on January 24 and falling to Lake Erie 69-50 on the 26th.  Both games were in Alumni Hall, and after the split, the Panthers now stand at 4-15 on the season, including 2-7 at home.

Against Ashland, the Panthers had one of their best shooting performances of the season, going 26-51 from the field (51%), including 5-of-11 from behind the three-point line (45%).  As a bonus, the team scorched the free throw nets; nailing 18-of-20 tosses (90%).  ODU also forced 17 turnovers, which was converted into 23 points.

Against Lake Erie, the Panthers did not fare as well, only shooting 34 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from the courtesy stripe.

The Storm edged the Panthers on the boards, outrebounding ODU 42-23. The Panthers held the advantage in turnovers though, only committing 14 and forcing 17.

Panthers to Watch

Senior point guard Morgan Jones (Oberlin, Ohio) was a preseason All-GLIAC Second Team selection. In the GLIAC, the senior is eighth in points (16.0), third in assists (4.8) and fourth in steals (1.7). In his career, Jones has scored 1031points, dished out 250 assists and has accumulated 137 steals. Jones has moved into fifth place in career steals.

Sophomore center Bobby Stauffer (Lexington, Ky.) ranks second in the Panther lineup in points per game, averaging 11.3. On the defensive end, Stauffer grabs 6.9 rebounds per game. In the GLIAC, Stauffer ranks ninth in total rebounds and fourth in offensive rebounds with 33.

Senior forward John Trew (Barberton, Ohio) is currently in second place in career blocks for ODU, swatting away 112, ranking him fourth in the GLIAC.

About the Dragons

Tiffin enters Saturday's game with a 7-13 overall record and a 4-10 mark in the GLIAC.  Most recently, the Dragons split a pair of games last week, defeating Lake Erie 78-44 and falling to Ashland 67-64. Joe Graessle paces the Dragons, averaging 23.7 points per game.

Panthers – Dragons

Tiffin has a 30-17 advantage in the series. Over the last two years, since ODU joined the GLIAC, the Dragons are 3-1 against the Panthers. A year ago, Tiffin won at home, 86-78, but fell to the Panthers 70-66 in Columbus, Ohio. 

At Tiffin, the Panthers had a 38-of-31 halftime lead. The Panthers shot 40 percent (28-of-70) for the game. Jones provided 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists to lead ODU.

At home, ODU trailed by as much as 14 in the first half, but outscored Tiffin 41-30 in the final 20 minutes to rally back for the victory. Jones led all players with 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting in 28 minutes off the bench. He also had four assists and four rebounds. The Panthers finished the game shooting 41.7 percent (25-of-60) from the floor.
