Panthers Claim Victory as Jones Tops 1,000 Points

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Senior point guard Morgan Jones (Oberlin, Ohio) scored his 1,000 career point on a three-point jump shot early in the first half and the Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team went on to defeat visiting Ashland 75-71 Thursday night in Alumni Hall.

Jones began the game with 999 career points, but his 22 markers, five assists and four steals were keys to the victory. Sophomore center Bobby Stauffer (Lexington, Kentucky) was also a major contributor. Stauffer recorded his fourth double-double of the season, scoring 10 points and hauling in 10 rebounds.  Senior forward John Trew (Barbeton, Ohio) chipped in with 12 points and seven boards.

Jones trey at the 16:22 started a 7-0 run by the Panthers, who led by as much as 14 before the Eagles ended the half with a 12-0 run of their own. Despite the big push by Ashland, the Panthers still led at the break 35-32.

Hot shooting by ODU was a major factor in the first half, as the Panthers shot 51.7 from the field on 15 of 29, including 50 percent from beyond the arc (3-of-6).

The second half featured seven score ties and eight lead changes and both teams battled back and forth for 20 minutes.

The Eagles scored the first basket of the second half, cutting the lead to one, 35-34 at the 19:04 mark. ODU would rally after a triple by sophomore forward Brock Ammons (Findlay, Ohio) and a deuce by Jones, pushing the lead back to six at 40-34.

The next ten minutes saw four lead changes and two ties, but the Panthers would gain momentum, and at the 5:01 mark, they forged ahead with their largest lead of the half 68-61, thanks to a pair of free throws by Trew. The Eagles would come storming back, taking the lead 69-68 with 2:04 left to play.

ODU regained the lead at 70-69, on a pair of Jones free throws but Ashland responded with a pair of their own to take the lead once again at 71-70.

Trew once again found himself at the courtesy stripe, missing the front end but nailing the second to tie the game at 71-71 with 1:03 left to play.

With the game knotted and the clock ticking down to twenty seven seconds, junior guard Ledarius Stennis (Moss Point, MS) came up with a clutch steal, dished it out to freshman Mark Minch (West Chester, Ohio) who was fouled. Minch hit the pair of free throws to give the Panthers a 73-71 lead.

As the clock was winding down, Ashland's David Harris missed the go-ahead three-pointer but was rebounded by Brooke Turson, who then missed the tying layup. Stennis came up with the defensive rebound and was quickly fouled.

With one second remaining, Stennis hit both free throws to seal the victory for the Panthers.

ODU returns to Alumni Hall this Saturday, Jan. 26 for a 1 p.m. conference match up against Lake Erie.
