COLUMBUS, Ohio – Hoping to right the ship after a string of disappointing losses, the Ohio Dominican men's basketball team battled hard against former American Midwest Conference (AMC) turned GLIAC conference foe Walsh on Thursday night in Alumni Hall. ODU had several excellent moments in the first half, but the Panthers could not match the same numbers in the second half, and fell to the Cavaliers 78-64.
ODU now stands at 3-13 on the year (0-11 GLIAC) while the Cavaliers move to a 10-4 mark (6-4 GLIAC).
The Panthers battled toe-to-toe with the Cavaliers in the first half, shooting 48.6 percent from the field on 18-of-37 shooting, including 42.9 percent from beyond the arc. Walsh shot 45.7 percent on 16-of-35 shooting and just 28.6 from the three-point line.
With the game tied at 7-7 at the 17:12 mark, the Cavaliers went on a 10-4 run to push the margin to six. The Panthers would cut the lead to two on a freshman forward Trent Weaver (Hilliard, Ohio) layup, with 10:39 left to play in the half.
The Cavaliers retained the lead for the remainder of the half with the Panthers reaching within one, 24-23 at the 7:14 mark after a steal by freshman guard Chad Nelson (Pickerington, Ohio) to allow senior point guard Morgan Jones (Oberlin, Ohio) to lay it in.
With time expiring, the Panthers found themselves down by just four, 38-34, until Walsh's Kenny Kornowski grabbed an offensive rebound and laid it back in as the buzzer sounded to end the frame.
Walsh controlled the second half, going up by as much as 18. The Panthers could not overcome the deficit, falling to the Cavaliers by a final margin of 14.
